Nsub Placement

Posted by: PaulFM on 10 February 2007

Has anyone got any tips regarding the placement of the Nsub, the book recommends 10cm away from wall.
System:
200/202 driving a pair of Nsats and sub.

Objective is to try to remove some of the boominess, should I bring it further away from the wall?

thanks
Paul

Hi Paul, I have a Nsub and have have positined it 10 cms from the wall. With music I use 5 presets (the 6th is for AV)at different filter levels according to the music I am playing, and on some occassions I have to mute the sub where bass boom is evident although this is infrequent.
have you made full use of the filter settings?.

Gerry,
Very similar usge to you in that I use all 6 settings with the occasional spinner requiring me to take the sub to the lowest setting. In general input 4 is used.

4. xover 60 gain 72
5. xover 45 gain 72
6. xover 40 gain 72

is this similar to the xover that you have ?With the previous amp both xover and gain were up 10 points.
If you bring the thing further from the wall I would assume this has the same affect of lowering gain.

Paul Ighave the same xovers as you but the maximum gain I use is 55, normally 50.

I don't understand! Once the Sub is set up, you should not have to change it at all. When correctly setup, if the bass is boomy then it's the fault of the recording!

If this is not the case, why don't Naim just put a tone balance on the the pre-amp????

Hi Paul;

I've had some experience with REL subs. Richard Lord (their designer) found that his subs seemd to 'drive' the room more effectively with corner placement.

I know that this is anathema to normal loudspeaker placement, but a sub is a different kettle of fish.

Subs don't boom - rooms do!

You simply have to try every possible practical location, until the sub connects with the room, producing deep bass but no boom.

Good luck.

John.

jackliebling you are correct, if all music discs were mastered by the same engineer no problem but at the end of the day it comes down to the discs and their individuality which is why Naim give the 6 presets to allow for these differences.
Best masterer around - Bob Ludwig, every disc I have of his is excellent Winker
John, unfortunately I am limited on the placement which is why I experiment with the xover, gain etc. I could move it further away from the wall.
