Wanted: Your 6 favorite tracks of all time
Posted by: Rich Jerskey on 15 October 2003
I consider myself having a fairly broad musical experience but I'm always looking for good stuff I may have missed along the way. I think it'd be cool to see some of the contributors here post their 6 favorites from any genre that come to mind with minimal racking the memory banks (not supposed to put much thought into this). Here's mine.
Not in any particular order but all are unbelievable inspiring to me.
1. "Mediterranean Sundance" from DiMeola, DeLucia and McLaughlin "Friday Night in San Francisco"
2. "I think it's going to work out fine" from Ry Cooder "Bop till You Drop"
3. "New World Symphony" Dvorak
4. "Guitar Concerto" Rodrigo
5. "Shenandoah" Bill Frisell (and Ry Cooder) from "Good Dog, Happy Man"
6. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from Allman Bros "Live at Filmore East"
You probably want to list 20 and it's hard to just put down 6 but we have to make it practical for the Forum. Thanks.

Subject to alteration according to mood, if there's a 'p' in the month, and so on, and you may want to wrangle about whether some entries constitute "a track", but right now it's...
1. Mass in B Minor, JS Bach
2. My Girl, the Temptations
3. All Blues, Miles Davis
4. Trois Gymnopedies, Satie
5. Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
6. Electric Counterpoint, Steve Reich

Tough Choice. Totally different exercise from 6 fave albums/ CD's. In keeping with the brief of minimal brain racking, here is my current six-pack in no real order - that will always depend on mood at selection time.
1. "Misguided Angel" - Cowboy Junkies
2. "Visions of Johanna" - Bob
3. "You Set The Scene" - Love
4. "Words Unspoken Sight Unseen" - Richard Thompson
5. "Solomans Ride" - Giant Sand
6. "Tempo House" - The Fall
But out of the above albums, there is only ONE that I will play from start to finish and enjoy every track and that is "Forever Changes"
Happy listening
Ron

Man after my own heart - Arthur was ROCKING at Glastonbury - very very good indeed...
Which brings me on to:
"Alone again or" - Love
"Moving" - Kate Bush
"Kill/Gobbing on life" - Albertos Y Los Trios Paranoias
"Teenage kicks" - The Undertones
"Savoy Truffle" - The Beatles
"The jack that house built" - Jack'n'chill
There's a hell of a lot more but these'll do for now - I'd put Steve Harley's "Make me smile (come up and see me)" but then I'd have to ditch the Albertos one, and I've been playing that tonnes since I located a decent copy of it...

Savoy Truffle?!
Mine (and this is all so subjective as to be a fairly un-shared thread):
'Feel Flows': the Beach Boys (sorry Brian);
'Hey Jude': the Beatles (sorry everyone);
'That's it for the Other One': Grateful Dead;
'Easy to Slip': Little Feat (because the rest of 'Sailin' Shoes' is to follow!;
'Sweet Thing': Van Morrison;
'Both of Us(Bound to Lose): Manassas.
That's this week, anyway. All 1968-72!!

Todays choices, in no particular order are:
Blue Angel - The Squirrel Nut Zippers
The Island - Dee Dee Bridgewater
Masters of War - Bob Dylan
The Sleepless Sailor - Kate Rusby
Tin Pan Alley - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Take Five - Dave Brubeck Quartet
Tomorrow, it may well be different, and I guess that's the point of having a lot to choose from. Decisions, decisions.

Almost an impossible task and certainly prone to changing my mind as soon as I've posted but my prog rock six-pack is:
Xanadu - Rush
Telegraph Road - Dire straits
Columbia - Oasis
Highway Star - Deep Purple
Rock Lobster - B52's
Old - Dexy's Midnight Runners
With Love's Forever Changes I'd be hard pressed to pick a favourite track, it all being pretty fantastic.

Hey, why not? I played my older Sisters copy of the White Album to death when I was a young lad and my favourite track at the time was Savoy Truffle. Then again, I was only 5....
As for my own choices, well it's just too damn difficult to choose. My 6 favourite tracks of today will probably be different to my 6 favourite tracks of tomorrow. If I had to choose, I know that Victoria De los Angeles, Ann Peebles and Neil Young would certainly feature....

Arse - forgot about those - but c'mon guys - what's so wrong with me liking Savoy Truffle if someone can call Telegraph Road "prog rock" (or is it?).
I could have gone for the standard boring tracks off White, like Dear Prudence (which really does tie with Savoy for me - but it's Lennon so an obvious one) or Martha My Dear, Honey Pie, or Back in the USSR - or even - SHOCK HORROR - Don't pass me by, which I really really like and I don't know why - is that a Mellotron on there? Savoy just gets me though - it's that cheesy guitar break and the organ that I like - in fact, I like ALL the George tracks on there. I LOATHE and DESPISE Good night though - eeeeeuck!
Revolution Number Nine though - the jury's out - I like it when I'm blitzed, but then again, I've been freaked out by it too - in a darkened room in Uni
Back on topic - sorry for the woffling there.

I won't sue you, but I will refer you to Van Morrison's "Almost Independence Day", which is amazingly similar and predates the PF track by a few years (on St. Dominic's Preview IIRC, a Top album!).
This isn't a comment on relative quality, btw, I love them both.
Pete.

Hey all,
I realise that your top 6 can change depending on mood, weather, if you just got lucky, etc.. What I want is your top 6 as of the MOMENT. Feel free to update later if you want. Thanks.
p.s. Call it what you want ...a DAD top 6? oookaaay. Can't help it if the best music was from the 60's 70's etc... Whatever. Thanks for all the responses now I can beef up my next Amazon order based on some interesting tracks listed. Hope others also get some chances to check out some different/new sounds of whatever genre they like best that's been represented herein. Why 6, you ask? Well 5 wasn't quite enough and I kind of wanted the list to be straightforward. I thought too high a number would discourage those who didn't feel like putting a whole lot of time into it. Not all of us have way too much time on our hands, right Joe? Cheers.
