Now that I have a film scanner…

Posted by: Tony L on 16 August 2001

System 1 – P9, CD17KI, Walkman Pro, 32.5 / Hicap / 250 / Kan IIs. The record storage is from Ikea, and is the cheapest option I have yet found for getting the job done neatly.

System 2 – Music kit (Korg MS 2000, Yamaha RM1X, Samson 1602 rack mixer, Shergold Marathon bass), Revolver Rebel (yes I can get a record on and off it where it is… just!), Naim Nait 1, Heybrook Point Fives on Kan II stands.

CD storage, cheapest and neatest solution I have seen yet for reasonably sized collections, once again Ikea saves the day.

Tony,

Cool, your scanner's good enough to make out that you have Stan, Kyle and Cartman on the record shelf.

By the way, have you removed the speaker(s) from your TV? I did it on my tube and it's well worth the trouble.

Nice Pics Tony. It's appreciated.

Not sure about the Ikea storage though.

Call me a traditionalist but I kinda like wood.

Whaddya reckon to this as a storage medium?

I'm currently on my third and I'm running out of space again!

Best

Hi, Tony

Nice pictures! Your new film scanner does a very nice job. Much better than my flat Canon one.

O, I finally received my Kan-II stands this afternoon. I only ordered 'em bacause they look better with my Kan's than the Target's did,and I never really thought it would/could be much of an improvement, but boy,was I wrong...

Here are some pictures, taken this afternoon.
My system pictures

btw, I see on your first system picture that you also have some kind of wooden/laminate floor?

I'm getting a laminate (hope this is the right Englisch word) floor myself next week.
Do you think it would have a big (negative) influence on the sound of my sytem. I do plan to get me big, thick carpet to lay in between my system and the sofa though.

See ya' guys,

Alco.

Really nice pictures Alco, and I'm glad you got the necessary finishing touches - and that they're sounding better than expected.

Swapping the position of the CD3.5 with the flatcap might also yield some unexpected results smile

Thanx, Andrew.

Hmm,So I oughta swap the position of my 3.5 with
the f/c...? I read some stuff about these things, but never really understood why or what defference it could possably make.

but, then again...I also never realised that my new Kan stands would bring such an improvement.
I just came into my computerroom after a 20 minutes listening at Lyle Lovett at late-night,low listening levels and wow, it sounds more open, detailed and the bass is playing much more defined tunes.

So,I'm one happy bloke

tell me that isn't an effects pedal the Shergold's running through? eek Next you'll be buying an active J-bass! big grin

Bit concerned about the cable-dressing in system 2, though.

And hey, are those pics with the
Lomo? (not to be confused with
Lomu!

Not yet, I do plan to though as I did with my last set. I will be honest, I cant even work out how to get the bloody stand off the TV, it went on easy enough though seems to have attached itself limpet like. Will investigate.

He said wood, huh huh huh…

My issue is cost. I bet it cost me the same to store over 1000 CDs as it did you to store 200-300. I really like the look of a lot of the currently available low quantity systems (I’m not really a traditionalist, I would probably end up with some glass and stainless steel thing), but once you have to buy six or so they can end up costing as much as a second hand 82! If I recall correctly my Ikea thing cost somewhere around 200 quid, which works out at less than 20p per disk and pretty hard top beat. Storage of music is always a problem, I still have about 700 12” singles in five big tubs my bedroom!

It is, it’s a pretty crappy Zoom BFX708! I’m just using it to get a bit more gain into the mixer. The Shergold is really low output, I would really like a Line 6 Bass Pod to use as a bass preamp.

Never been to a studio? That’s neat!

No, this lot are the FM2n with 28mm.

When I moved in the room was quite live and splashy sounding, though obviously was completely empty. I have attempted to deaden it down in a relatively controlled manner. The rug in front of the speakers really helps with a floor to ceiling standing wave. The record storage is a really effective diffuser, as are the vertical blinds on the windows, the records also have an added benefit of really mass loading the floor near the turntable, I have no jumping or foot fall issues at all! I have two quite large paintings in the room at strategic points, they definitely deaden treble reflections. I have chosen to use big paper globe style light shades as they break up the ceiling a bit, I have two. There is also a large plant positioned to diffuse the wall reflection of the Kan that is out of the picture.

I have tried as far as possible to have a live and dead end with each opposing wall. Where I have a painting or something quite soft on one wall I have a diffuser such as the records or a large plant on the other. The room is pretty much there now sound wise, the only area I still need to think about is behind the listening chair which is actually hard to describe - the area is effectively split in two down the middle with my kitchen on one side and area leading up to the door where the pictured CD shelving is sited. All I need is a rug and another big plant and that area will work well acoustically.

Glad you like the Kan stands.

Tony,

Is that the Shergold that was built by Jack Golder, years ago?

Chris L

Posted on: 17 August 2001 by Alco
Well, I do have quite a big sofa and some thick curtains and my room measures 4.00 x 5.10 meters.
(How big is your room? in meters)

btw: I also have some Ikea CD-storage against the wall. It's cheap, blanc wood so I could give it any (wood)color I'd like, and one rack can hold up to 108 CD's.

note: one Ikea rack as showen in my picture costs only 6,- UKP!! and might also work as a diffuser.

Well,after I installed (well,that is,..probably my Dad for 65%,me for 35%, big grin ) the wooden floor,
I'll let ya know how it influenced the sound of my system. (that'll be next week wednesday I guess)

See ya'

Yes. Mine was one of the final ones made that had remained unsold after his death and were part of his estate, a few became available through Loot a few years ago, so effectively I managed to buy a brand new vintage bass! I have always been a fan of Shergold guitars, and this is the second Marathon bass I have owned. Shergold have that unique Burns look and feel without the extreme collectors price tags.

There is a fabulous unofficial Shergold site here: www.shergold.com run by a guy called Andrew, I sold him his Nu-Meteor.

That's great, thanks.

I've got one of Jack's run of 18 (I think) Burns Marvin guitars, and it's one of only two from that run made in the green sunburst finish. It's a bit depressing to realise that Jack made these Marvins to try to recoup some of the money that Jim Burns had swindled hime out of - I suspect Jack died still being owed rather a lot of it frown

If I ever get around to buying a film for my camera, or buying a digital camera, I'll post a pic of the Marvin - it's lovely!

I've done a quick sketch as the layout is a bit odd. The whole space is about 19 x 13 foot I guess, with the listening area being about 12 x 13.

Key: Black = hi-fi / TV etc. Grey = chair / sofa. Green = record and CD storage. Red = kitchen.

Burns green is the finish to have. One of my friends had a green-burst Baldwin Double Six and it looked so cool. The burns I would kill for is a Bison bass. Definitely put a picture up of you Marvin.

Tony:

i decided to lay the new laminate floor on top of the existing carpet floor. (hope I pronounced it all right)
The salesman at the DIY store and also the laminate floor-manual said that it could be done.
Hopefully it will lay stable and won't get the light Kan-stands to wobble or shake. roll eyes well,we'll see..

here's my roomplan:

Tony, didn't you used to have 135's?

Tony, didn't you used to have 135's?

Yes. They went in phase one of my crazy reverse upgrade plan, though in this case the money went to paying the bloody stamp duty on my flat.

When I bought the 135s I originally was only shopping for a 250, though could not find one, so as I was earning reasonable wedge at the time I just bought them second hand. The Isobariks thanked me for this it has to be said. To be honest I have not missed them at all since going back to Kans, I think you need a better preamp to hear anything other than a slight tonal difference if you don't need the extra power, and as the 250 is a fair bit warmer I prefer it. At the time I was putting together the classic flat earth system I had always longed for: LP12 / Ittok / 32.5 / Hicap / 135 / Isobarik. Since then my priorities have changed, I now just want a small and simple system with the emphasis firmly on tune playing. Once I find a good late Nait 2 the 250's days are numbered, though this time the cash will definitely be redistributed to the source.

Tony.

Oi! world, sell me a Nait 2.

Tony:

sorry, you can't have mine!! razz big grin razz

Unfortunatly I can't help you on a New-style Nait-2,but if you really want a nait-2 I can give you an adress where they still have an old style one for sale. (my dealer even liked the old ones better)
I also think the old ones sound just a little more open in the mids then a new-style Nait-2.
but the oldies look worse compared to a new-one,IMHO.

Here's the adress: Spring-air.
It's a German HiFi store which is specialized in selling s/h equipment. They can send the Nait to you.

Spring-Air

Click on "Verstarker" and then "Vollverstarker",and then you'll find their complete line of s/h integrated amps.

Here's the little baby waiting for his new daddy.

Thanks very much Alco, but I think I will hang on for a new style one (I want it to match the CDX when I eventually get that). I am sure I will find one relatively soon, I've only been looking a few days, there is no rush. Very interesting (and worrying) that you find the old ones sound better though - anyone else got a view on this?

When I find a late Mk 2 I just hope it sounds at least as good as my as yet unrecapped Mk 1, I could definitely live with that, especially once I upgrade the sources.

Alco,

Is there a way of searching the site, because there's a few things I am after, and it is rather slow to look at the whole catalogue, especially when you can't understand German!

Thanks

Ben

When I picked up my Kan's at my favorite Naim dealer, a couple o' months ago,He gave me a demo of the following:

New-style nait-2/CD-3/Kan-II's and after that

an Old-style Nait-2/CD-3/Kan-II's,
at first I didn't notice any difference/improvement,but then after about 10 minutes I swapped back to the new-style Nait-2 and hey,..blimy,he was right.

I did notice a (very) small difference.
I played "Had I a golden thread" by Eva Cassidy and her voice sounded a little more transparent and there seemed to be a little more air using the old-style Nait.

But hey, to me the difference wasn't big enough to choose for the ugly duck. I also like the new-style Nait-2 better!

My dealer once said to me that Naim is like a good wine: the older, the better. That's why he always liked the Nait-1 best. He hates the nait-3.

Greetings,
Alco.

No, I'm sorry Ben.

Unfortunately you can't search for anything on the Spring-Air site. People have to go through the whole product-line in alphabetical order.
