System 1 – P9, CD17KI, Walkman Pro, 32.5 / Hicap / 250 / Kan IIs. The record storage is from Ikea, and is the cheapest option I have yet found for getting the job done neatly.

Alco,

I hope you will still be able to open the door once the new floor is on top of that carpet!

Well,Martin

I'm afraid the doors will touch the wooden floor, but it's easier to get a few millimeters off the door, than it is getting the old glued (!) carpet out of the room.

The only nightmare I can think of, is that the new floor won't be as flat and stable as the old glued to the floor carpet.
If that's the case, then the light Kan-II might not get a stable,resonance-free underground, and it will be hard to get 'em set up properly.

just have to wait and see,eh

here's the adress of my favorite Naim dealer in Holland. He doesn't have a website yet, but he always has some s/h Naim goodies in his shop,so you might wanna check him out if has a new-style Nait-2. I know he still has a Nait-2 left, but I'm not sure if it's a new- or old-style Nait.

the question is does your samson sound any good?

Its not bad, I’d say good for the money and 2u size. Sound wise you can definitely tell that its there though, a synth looses a bit of sparkle and punch compared to being stuck straight into the amp, but it doesn’t really add any real horribleness. The EQ is ok, its not harsh and you can whack it up quite a way, its just two band with no parametric. It has insert points on the first three stereo channels, and the first two channels also have mono XLR mic inputs. One thing that pisses me off is that it has no tape outs so to record you either have to daisy chain a recorder between the mixer and amp or run the signal through the amp (which assumes you use a preamp). Also the two effect loops are a bit of a con, they each comprise of a mono send and a stereo return, so if you want to use true stereo outboard kit effectively you only have one loop. Considering that it only costs about 300 quid it’s a really good buy.

How much are you actually looking to spend? If you have the money and space there have been some stunning deals around on the Soundcraft Spirit Studio range, I used to own a 16-8-2 and really loved it – excellent sound quality, great EQ that you could push to real extremes without it loosing the plot, and a really good logical layout and easy routing, nice mute buttons too. A while back you could get a new one for about 800 quid, which is absolutely amazing since I paid about 1500 second hand for one in about 92! I like pretty much all the Soundcraft range.

The Spoundcraft Studio 16-8-2 is what we used for the course I did last year. Easy enough to drive, for sure.

Rico - Save the Kans!

Posted on: 18 August 2001 by Alco
Well,Rico ..you just took the words right outta my mouth..

A couple of hours back,I saw an ad on a Dutch HiFi-site from a guy who was looking for a s/h pair of Kan-1 or II's.

I thought,well,let's give this nice chap a helping hand,eh.
I send him a mail in which I told him that I knew of a shop that still has a pair of Kan-I's for sale.

well,I just received a mail back....the poor fella wanted to use the Kans as rear speakers for his home-theatre setup. eek eek eek

pure Kan abuse,IMHO

O,well. things happen..

Greetings,Y'all

I did notice a (very) small difference.
I played "Had I a golden thread" by Eva Cassidy and her voice sounded a little more transparent and there seemed to be a little more air using the old-style Nait.

Alco,

unless both amps had been recently recapped I would have to question whether the older amp had seen a little less usage and was that bit fresher?

cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,

Both amps were NOT recapped.
the dealer always told me before I even had a Nait-2 (had an Onix-OA20 before, lovely amp),
that if I could chose I'd better go for the old-style one.
I never really took those words seriously, but afterall he was right. But again, the difference at the demo was very small.
So,my first Nait-2 was an old-style one, bought at this dealer for 250,-UKP,a year later I had the change to by me a mint new-style Nait-2 for only 125,- UKP
I'd go for the new-style anyway, because of the better volumepot. (well, at least in my case)

cheers,
Alco

OKay here goes. First attempt at pic posting - please forgive if it goes wrong! Sorry the photos aren't terrific, I'm not very good with my Dad's camera.

Should be visible now - for some reason, FortuneCity aren't keen on linking directly to pictures. Anyway, if it doesn't appear here, the pics can be found at:

Hopefully ;-)

Indeed. Very nice. Looks to be in absolutely mint condition too. The Burns I would kill for is the Bison bass, I've played one and its as good as it looks.

Hmm, sorry about the pics not showing up very well here - damn fortunecity, if they weren't free I'd complain!

The Marvin is virtually mint - it only gets played on VERY special occasions. Plus, it's effectively been in storage for the last six years or so, as I've been moving around a lot.

At least we won't be diving for the same Burns item, though. I'd rather like one of the four pick-up Black Bisons, but the prices these days are, frankly, rediculous, so I doubt I'll ever get one. And it doesn't really suit my playing these days, as I'm mostly hitting the Chicago and British Blues stuff.

Plenty of new stuff on the Burns site www.burnsguitars.co.uk The cheaper Club Series even has Bisons now, though certain details such as the bridge do not seem remotely authentic to the originals. The Club Series Marquee bass looks damn cool though, especially in green-burst (IMHO the Burns / Shergold finish).

Chris,

Your pics aren't working because you are linking directly to the .jpg's. What you would need to do is wrap a bit of html code around the jpgs and post a link to that. Not easy if you aren't familiar with html.

I think the reason for this is that FortuneCity want to blat you with a bit of advertising when you visit a web page they host. This is only possible if your browser is being pointed to a html file.

Yeh, I know that about FortuneCity. What was weird was that I tried it, and it worked fine on my PC - until I removed all the cached files. Obviously, IE was picking up the image file from the cache rather the server, and it seemed to work.

Anyway, I've removed the direct references to the images, and put in a URL for the page which shows them.

I see on the Burns UK web site they're actually selling a Brian May Sig model. Hmmm, a bit irksome considering Burns had nothing to do with making the guitar that Brian May uses and I used to know the guy who did make it!

Looks nice though, and the guitars (at least) play even better than the original Burns ones, despite the low prices.
