Opinions sought on Natalie Merchant: House Carpenter's Daughter

Posted by: joe90 on 22 January 2004

I bought this album cause I'm a total Natalie Stalker and I quite like it.

is it just me or is her voice a little over-recorded in spots???

I'm sure I heard the same quirk on 'Motherland'??

Opinions?

What are you on about?!? How can a voice be "over-recorded"? Are you saying that it's too wet, too dry, to close, to far, to clear, to distorted, to effected, too plain, too loud, to soft, or what?

BTW, I don't own any of her albums, although I've generally enjoyed her work when I chanced upon it, either solo or with 10,000 Maniacs.

Greetings from another Natalie stalker! I am currently staring at a picture of her that is pinned to my office PC. My wife clearly understands that if Natalie gave me half a chance I'd be off! And I couldnt say that about anyone else (apart from Liv Tyler!)
I havent yet heard House Carpenters Daughter (is this still only available via the internet?)so I cant comment but her voice does seem to have changed dramatically over the years. For a very natural recording try her contribution to "Tears of Stone" by The Chieftains. The track is called "Lowlands of Holland". Orgasmic!

I assume he means over-produced or excessively treated with effects and general studio noodling.

Although I note that Sarah Brightman's voice is "over-recorded" in the sense that its been recorded far too often.

Ok, I've listened to samples from "Tiger Lilly" and "House Carpenter's Daughter". On the latest release, it sounds like someone's playing an LP at 30RPM. Confused

Sorry, by over-recorded I mean it sounds a bit distorted, like the gain was too high and you get this , well, distorted sound on the edge of her voice.

I mean if it's deliberate then I have no right to question it but if it's not it certainly isn't the one thing to make a voice sound like that.

OMG she's a mum???

I want the man responsible punished this instant! Mad
