Amazing entertainment

What an amazing spectacle of football tonight - you have got to feel sorry for chelsea, there was nothing between the teams. Poor John Terry, a trooper throughout slips on a patch of damp grass and its downhill from there.

Amazing. Lovely to see Bobby Charlton at the end with all the Munich links.

Stunning

I think the stats were a bit misleading though. Chelsea had something like 25 shots on goal and United only 10 or 11, but a lot of Chelsea's were just potshots and United had a lot of opportunities that didn't register as 'shots' like the cross that Tevez missed and others.

Overall, fairly evenly matched I thought and a lot more interesting than the last final with teams from the same nation, AC Milan v Juventus.

It had me on the edge of my seat, or rather, of my old rocking chair. John Terry was magnificent: his speed of reaction and athleticism in blocking Gigg's shot was one of the best things I have seen in 60 years of watching top class football. It is such a shame that Chelsea come away regarded as losers, they played so well in the second half.
As a Man U supporter I saw the result I wanted, but it was close, so close.

It was so fast it took two replays before I even saw Terry's block.

Despite the undoubted entertainment, little seems to have been said about the generally appaling behavior of the players on the pitch.

There was constant arguing with the officials by both sides. This was not helped by the fact that IMHO Man U seemed to get more than their fair share of decisions their way, with a number of Chelsea players rackick up cards early on, while Man U players seemed to escape punishment.

Van Der Sar's gamesmanship during the penalties was somewhat unsporting as well. Was it only me that saw him point to his left just before Anelka took his penalty?

Still an exciting game with lots of drama, but I wish the refs got the same respect as they do on a rugby pitch.

Man Utd certainly did get the majority of the 50/50 decisions and even a few that were clearly chelsea balls.

I don't know why you're criticising Van der Sar - it all seemed perfectly reasonable. What Was unacceptable however was the appalling behaviour of many of the Chelsea players. The tackle by Carvalho on Ronaldo was so cynical and typifies the way that Chelsea play. And as for Drogba...well what can you say, he was disgrace.

Although Drogba has a lot of bad qualities, I like him, plus he is an amazing talent. Also I am not so sure what was so bad about his conduct in the final.

The referees have lost control of penalties ever since that arse at Liverpool was allowed to stutter during the run up to try and send the goalie. Since then "the single continuous motion" run up has beed exploited and the goalies also jump, wave and point. All very sporting like. Could explain why I don't bother to watch this so called sport any more.

I think you have lost the plot a bit here....haven't penalty takers always tried to send the keeper the wrong way? So what if they exaggerate the run up? As for Ronaldo, he paid the price for trying to be too clever when he took his and Cech just stood his ground and actually watched the ball not the body language.

Same thing for keepers too....they have always used some form of gamesmanship to try to distract the penalty taker.

Nothing new under the sun and moon.

Jim, of course it's fine to try to send the goalie the wrong way, but the point here is that it's against the laws of the game to stop and restart the way Ronaldo did the other night. I suspect he should have been made to retake it but I think he got what he deserved, and made an arse of himself in the process. And who can forget Bruce Grobbelaar's antics in a European Cup shootout in the early 80s?

Apart from slapping an opposing player you mean? Which was at best stupid given the ref was standing next to him at the time.
Posted on: 23 May 2008 by freddie59
Yeah, sorry wasn't actually referring to that! (which was stupid) I was referring to the way the commentators were always saying Drogba was complaining furiously about decisions when he actually wasn't. Although I can understand how he has brought this upon himself.

Agreed and he paid the price for being too clever by half....

Of course, I'm a little biased, as a goalkeeper I was paid to play for a good number of years and I thought Van der Sar did a great job in bluffing Anelka.

I still don't understand why there were no Championship sides in the Champions final - oh well.

It wasn't a bad game - I thought Chelsea were the better team overall and I detest penalties as a way to decide who gets the trophy. Still both sides had a go, which was good for Euro final.

It was interesting see Ronaldo in his last game before his pending transfer to Real Madrid. I wonder who United will replace him with? Pablo Counago is not for sale BTW.

I thought drogba was hilarious when he sent a free kick way off target. He did look like he was complaining about someone or something. The man maybe has strange delusions going on inside his head......................... you can't take your eye off him for a second tho, he's as deadly as a deadly thing but he is on another planet.

As for the penalties.................... that's entertainment.

Thought Chelsea were the better team second half but Man U created more decent chances over all (nearly all in the first half)

Barry Wardrobe isn't for sale either I think he has retired.
