Advice to an AV newbie coming from 2 way audio world

Posted by: mynaimisdave on 01 January 2007

I am new to AV, have a conventional Naim stereo setup - CD2, 112/NAPSC/HICAP, 250, SBL.

I am not wanting to spend silly money, but am considering a plasma 42” panel, ideally want to keep this really simple with HD feed from Telewest, maybe some HD DVD player and Xbox 360 in the future. Want to route the left and right channel via the Naim stereo setup via the preamp. Is it therefore possible to buy a receiver that takes 5.1 sound track in, powers the rear and central speakers directly and route, as line-in, the main left and right via existing Naim set-up. Forgive me for not using the right terms here, as I say I am very new to this world!

Finally any recommendations for the plasma and AV receiver, I don’t want spend much more the £1500 on these two components. Have other good quality speakers I can use for the central and rear speakers.

have you considered simply using your current stereo setup? it would save you the cost of an extra receiver and allow you to spend some money on a sub woofer, which might be a good addition for av applications.

if not, consider using the multi channel analogue outputs of your source to connect each channel to the corresponding receiver/preamp. doing so will avoid the need of re-routing left and right channels from the receiver to the preamp.

Well, I wouldn't say it has to be a plasma - the right LCD can be at least comparable to a similarly priced plasma (I have a Sharp XD1 and it's gobsmacking), but with a 42" screen in your sights you should easily gobble up that budget on the screen alone!

Mind you - that could be a good thing - buy a great screen, site your stereo with the speakers either side, and enjoy great pictures with great stereo, rather than mediocre images and mediocre surround sound. Big Grin

Mike
thanks for that input, I am very early into my thinking on moving on from an old 32"CRT. Think you idea of being happy with 2 channel is sound, can alway add fancy speaker set-up when funds allow and indeed if I get hooked! very interested in your XD1, price looks very good, how are you getting on with it, top 3, and 3 things you least like would be really interesting.

cheers

This xmas I finally got around to getting surround sound in my systim.
72/hi/250 was linked up with a small Denon 2106.
Front is an n-Cent powered by an old NAP140 I had, with the rears being ancient Tamon spkrs I had from varsity days powered from the denon.
For the relatively small outlay I have a very good surround sound system, and HEAPS better than simple stereo.

The down side is upgraditis - with the n-Sats being the next item on the shopping list...
