Films that bring tears to a bloke's eyes
Posted by: ianmacd on 30 September 2007
Here are five films I can't watch without having to duck behind raised knees on the couch to hide my tears from my wife.
The final scene in Woody Allen's Manhattan.
Clint and Hilary's first full dialogue in hospital in Million Dollar Baby.
The final departure of Gregory Peck from the courthouse in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Numerous scenes from Mystic River, yes, another Clint Eastwood directed film...!
Benicio Del Toro in 21 Grams, when in prison.
I realise these are not what might be termed obvious tear-jerkers but they do it for me every time.
I'd be interested to know what films have the same effect on other forum members.
Best regards
Ian

In reverse order...
3. The Elephant Man
2. Cinema Paradiso
And the winner, by a mile...
1. E.T. (of course)
Anyway, enough of this girl talk. Mick'll be along in a minute to berate us, and will probably want our opinions on outdoor electrical equipment.

The only thing that could bring tears to my eyes is the twaddle that you right.
The thought of you bawling your eyes out and soaking up hankerchiefs in a cinema is somewhat disturburbing.
Please write more sensible topics.
I have just bought a garden shredder today, please let us know your views on shredders as it is more useful to mankind than hearing of your sobbing.
What the hell does your wife think of you.
Regards
Mick
PS Chirpa ... Please do not encourage him

Hmmm.

Agreed. The scene when the doc's wife shows John Merrick the wedding photo of her son. Even Mick would be heartbroken.quote:The Elephant Man

The end 'The Big Blue'
The first 3 mins of 'Saving Private Ryan' (visiting military cemeteries always reduces me to tears)
Schindler's List.
Mick,
Have you a heart of stone?

Excellent post Mick - I like your style. However, the original poster is ianmacd, not acad (granted, where one goes, the other follows).

Another vote for Cinema Paradiso
(Oh dear poor Parry - you really are losing the plot)

Mick is only heartbroken when he looks at photos of Margaret Thatcher. Keep taking the meds Parry.

La Marseillaise scene in Casablanca. Just makes me so terribly proud to be French (and I'm not)

To answer the original poster's question...
nothing
ever
makes
me
cry
Apart from...
The odd episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Specifically...
Becoming Part II - Buffy sends her lover to hell at the very moment he regains his soul.
The Gift - Buffy's heroic self sacrifice to save the world - and her sister (who isn't "really" her sister).
The Body - The first time I saw this episode, I had to rewind and start again, as I found its unflinching, melodrama-free, portrayal of death utterly overshelming. It might be the finest hour of television ever recorded.
Oh, OK, maybe a few films.
Off the top of my head...
The Shawshank Redemption - the closing sequence, which sees the reunion of the two old friends.
I'm getting teary just thinking about it.
Upon reflection...
Maybe I'm just a big wimpy cry-baby!
Sniff!

Strange, all these American movies, I thought everyone here hated the US.
Posted on: 30 September 2007 by Steeve
Most of my favourite modern films are not US, but strangly, the films that have made me cry are mostly old Hollywood films ...."It's A Wonderful Life" pretty much every time, "Breakfast at Tiffany's", even "High Society" once! There is also a Russian film called "Mother and Son" that did it for as well though.

west ham v liverscouse fa cup final, gets me every time !!

The first film to produce a tear was 'Goodbye Mr Chips', with Robert Donat. I was about 10, I think.

Why would you need to hide that? Totally baffling.

Midnight Cowboy. Ratso's death, Joe's tough cowboy/ little boy lost bewilderment and John Barry's haunting score.
Every time.
Every time.

Green Mile - the last half hour gets me every time.
Oh, and Something about Mary where he gets his sack caught in his zipper..how can any man watch that without a glistening eye?

See Mr sensible (not) is back. Rational to the last. WTF does it matter what subject people want to start a thread about. If you have nothing to add PO.

Thomas & the Magic Railroad. It was the first film I took my son to see at the cinema. Apart from that 'significant moment' the engines had american accents and Peter Fonda was dreadful. The whole thing was tear inducing

The last few minutes of Robin and Marion - setting aside the general spaghetti western feel, the last scene where Audrey Hepburn kills herself and Sean Connery because she's sick of running all the time. Sob.

The bit in the Elephant Man where he plaintively declares
"I am a man, not an elephant"
Then asks "Can I have a bun please?"
Tears, every time.

Most of the Marx Brothers films. Tears of laughter that is.

Cool Runnings, especially when the four Jamaicans cross the finishing line carrying their bobsleigh. Oh and also tears of laughter during most of the film.

Well that certainly brought a tear to my eye.
