Films that bring tears to a bloke's eyes
Posted by: ianmacd on 30 September 2007
Here are five films I can't watch without having to duck behind raised knees on the couch to hide my tears from my wife.
The final scene in Woody Allen's Manhattan.
Clint and Hilary's first full dialogue in hospital in Million Dollar Baby.
The final departure of Gregory Peck from the courthouse in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Numerous scenes from Mystic River, yes, another Clint Eastwood directed film...!
Benicio Del Toro in 21 Grams, when in prison.
I realise these are not what might be termed obvious tear-jerkers but they do it for me every time.
I'd be interested to know what films have the same effect on other forum members.
Best regards
Ian

I'd certainly include It's A Wonderful Life (despite numerous viewings) and Robin And Marian (though I'd never thought about the "spaghetti western" feel) and, of course, Cinema Paradiso - and I haven't watched the extended version yet!
I'd also add:
The Yakuza - Robert Mitchum & Ken Takakura in superb performances demonstrating what friendship and honour is all about.
Open Range - one of the most powerful films I've seen in a long time.
Madame X - the Lana Tuner version - somewhat OTT but it has had me shedding tears.
Even Deep Impact and Armageddon left me a little damp around the eyes.
And what about T2 when Arnie demands that [he] be lowered into the furnace.
Oh yes, there are so many and several rank as favourite movies of mine!

I'm embarrassed to draw tears to a comedy film, OK? I feel a real wimp and don't want to broadcast it, not even to my wife. Does that make you less baffled, chum?

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."
Blade Runner I've felt a tear in my eye ever since I was a child when I first saw this film.
