I need an odd obsolete LP12 part

Posted by: rp on 08 December 2001

I might as well give this a shot. This forum, it's my best, and probably only, chance.

I need the little, rectangular, metal, Linn badge/logo that goes in the center of the dustcover. It's the older gold (I think) colored badge for the grey/smoke covers, not the new clear ones. Specifically, my cover is the one with the long, gold anodized strip along the bottom front edge. It bothers me not having it; if it was there my deck would be almost new looking. Does anyone have one of these sitting around the house? Maybe someone has a cracked grey dustcover gathering dust and waiting to get thrown out. I'm sure the little badge can be pried out pretty easily. Maybe there's an ex-Linn employee with a whole drawer of little logos out there reading this right now. I'd happily offer fair compensation. BTW: Linn no longer has these. They sent me a new silver one free of charge but it doesn't fit the indentation, nor would it look right.

Are you sure it was gold? I still use an original black dustcover but I removed the long front piece and the top "LP-12 LINN SONDEK" badge so it looks better with my rosewood table. I was going to send you my badge(I glued it on my Discwasher stylus brush to be funny) but it's silver. FWIW, my front piece is also silver. It may be easier to locate a silver front piece as most of these peeled off over time anyway and were removed. It may also well be that the "gold" you're seeing is in fact discolored silver unless Linn confirms it was actually gold at one time. Lay it on a window ledge for a period of time in direct sunlight and it may well turn gold!

P.S.
Do you have the old dustcover or the REALLY old dustcover with the prop-up bar and non-spring hinges. Mine is the spring type(I can remove it easily for improved sound during serious listening sessions).

Hey Ron The Mon,

Modern style hinge not the prop-up kind. I assumed the badge was gold and that it would match the metal strip along the front which is definitely gold - It's the length of the dustcover, 1 cm wide, and says Linn LP12 Sondek on the far left side. I've seen this style once before, and that one was gold too. You'd think the top badge would match but I don't know that for a fact since I got the deck used and it never had it. BTW #25882 - very late 70's I guess.

Anyone out there know? Anyone know what it said, was it just 'Linn' like the new ones.

So Ron, you pulled the metal strip off? What's it look like underneath it? It doesn't look like there's an indent that it fits in, is there one? Did it come off clean or did it leave a lot of glue behind? I'm going to leave it in place since I like the looks of it but it's nice to know I can pull it off if it starts to peel. I'll certainly take that badge off your hands if it turns out to be the correct one. We need to find out if they were made in silver and gold. BTW the new badge Linn sent measures 1" by 1/2" but it's a tiny bit too big for the indent, so the old one was probably 15/16 by 7/16.

My LP12 from 79 has the gold/bronze strip you mention, but the little badge on top is definitely silver.

Hope this puts your mind a little more to rest.

Sounds good to me.

I got your e-mail and I'd be happy to swap badges. I appreciate your thoughts in letting me maintain the prestige of my stylus brush. Send me another e-mail with your mailing address and when you receive it and are happy with it, just mail me the new one. BTW, the way to install the badge on the black dustcover is to put a drop of 100% silicone on the dustcover and place the badge gently on it and center it. It measures 1"X 1/2" also but is intended to fit over the hole, not in it.
The black dustcover I have I got in a trade with a guy who wanted a newer clear one but couldn't justify the $100. price tag. When I saw what the black lid looked like with my rosewood plinth, I had to trade, even though one hinge spring was busted and the rubber bumpers, front plate, and top badge were all peeling off. A little dot of 100% RTV silicone on the bumpers and they haven't come off in 16 years. A little tug was all it took to remove the "Sondek" badges and I cleaned the plastic with an automotive polish. It looks very classy. If you're intereted, I'll post a photo.

P.S.
Your "wife swapping" post the other day was hilarious. I haven't laughed outloud like that in a long time.

Ron, I'll email my address and I'll send you the logo I have, hopefully they are not identical. I appreciate this.
I also like the looks of the grey cover but if I had the money to spend right now I'd get a clear cover in a minute. It's just to easy to turn down the vol. when the phone rings etc and just forget that you have a record playing - I've left it for half a day. I've yet to leave the house for work or worse, head out on vacation with a record still going round and round but I could see it happening. I guess that's why Linn changed to clear - maybe Ivor went on a 3 month expedition and left his $2500 Arkiv thumping away.
