DVD-Audio.....

Posted by: arf005 on 19 August 2005

Hello all,

having recently bought these two for a bargain....

The Rotel RDV-1060 DVD-A Player and RSX-1067 AV Receiver....I was wondering where others on here buy their DVD-A discs....??

I do own a few already that I'd purchased from amazon (mainly for the higher resolution, but I didn't have a full on 6-channel DVD-A player at the time) they were, The Doors - LA Woman, Mana - Live, 1812 overture, and the 4 seasons....

Is there anywhere else that sells (maybe even specialises, although I doubt it) in DVD-A or is amazon, or the like, as good as it gets....

I've already added a few into my shopping basket.....like.....

Dvorak:Symphony 9/Water Goblin
Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now
Bjork - Vespertine
The Police - Every Breath You Take
Santana - Abraxas
Bach: St. Matthew Passion
Bach: Organ Spectacular

...not all to be bought at once you understand... Big Grin
..any thoughts, or experience of any of the above would be cool.....

Cheers,
Ali

if you can find any more than the ones you have listed then you are doing well... Amazon is about as good as it gets.

Hi Ali

The local (Colchester) Virgin megastore sells DVD-A. Their website has some, but the search facility doesn't let you pick them out Frown
play.com has a separate category for them here - may be worth a try?

This is not much help but have I bought DVD-A's on Business trips to the States. Here is a list of what I managed to seperate out from stuff on the shelves over there which did not appeal at all. It might be usefull as a guide to some of what has been issued so you can try ordering if you can't find it in store. I have'nt bought any DVD-A's for quite some time now. Basically since I started using a CDS3 which slays anything off of DVD-A off any of the japanese suppliers players.

Dear Ali -

I think Geoff has named most of the worthwhile titles for you. One correction is that "Captain and Me" is the Doobie Brothers - not the eagles - and it rocks. I might add Neil Young's Greatest Hits (!!!!!) and Yes - Fragile and most definitely Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. Doors - LA Woman - Riders on the Storm is quite an experience in surround!

I have a Denon set up for DVD Audio, and don't listen to it nearly as much as my 2 channel set up (CDX/XPS/NAIT5/FC2/REGAP3) I run the l/r front channels through the unity gain/av channel on the NAIT from my Denon multichannel receiver.

One word of advice is to read the labels carefully. There are myriad flavors of multi-channel and "hi-res" audio and they are not always part of the same package. What usually occurs is that there are many discs that have a 2 channel high res mix, a multi channel high res mix, and a DTS low res (PCM)surround mix. They are all different and I usually end up preferring the former. Sometimes it is worth the novely of hearing Bohemian Rhapsody in surround though! The thing you have to watch out for is the DTS only discs that are not hi res at all and basically suck. Santana Abraxas and Police - Every Breath are two that you mentioned that originally only were released as DTS mixes, actually on CD, and required a DTS decoder to play (which is not a problem given your set up) I dont know, I just feel that the only reason to get these DVD-A's is for the increase space for higher resolution, 192/24 as opposed to 44/16 offered by most CDs.

One more variation worth scooping into is Classic Records HDAD format, which plays just like DVD A but only in 2 channel hi res. Alan Parsons-Turn of a Friendly Card and I Robot are sparkling examples. Pete Townshend's Who Came First isn't bad either.

All that being said, I would rather listen to crackly vinyl on my Naim/Rega set up!!!

Good luck!! Enjoy the music!!

John

Thanks for the correction. It was nagging at me because the disc itself does'nt have the artists name on it.

I agree about being carefull to read what is on the disk. The Steely Dan , Donald Fagen and a couple of others have genuine 192/24 stereo as you say and that IS worth hearing.

I have quiet a few pure DTS disks aswell. There are few gems like Joe Cocker, Sheryl Crow and Alan Parsons which come across well in full surround but not many.

I agree about the Vinyl too.

My 'other' system is a Pioneer DV-868 universal, Pioneer AX-5 receiver and 4 MA S5i + matching centre speaker in a decent sized living room.

I don't listen to much DVD-A simply because I can't find anything I like on it. I mainly like classical - The Harnoncout Matthew Passion on Teldec is superb. But I've found little else of interest.

As has been noted, a lot of releases are not actually hi-res, or only a little better than redbook CD. E.g. Riccardo Chailly's Mahler 8 on Decca, its 20bit/44.1Khz. Worst one so far was on Naxos, Paul Daniel's recording of Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, its 5 channels of 16/44.1!

I've found an lot more rich pickings for classical on SACD, where there seems to be a lot more support for the format from classical labels big and small. Sadly it probably won't last.

However I've now got 80+ classical SACDS, most of which are true DSD format for new recordings or DSD transfers from analogue master tapes - which show just how superb recording engineers were in the 1950s and 60s.

Despite having multichannel, I listen to SACD a lot more on the stereo system in different room, simpy because its a better system. But a good multichannel recording can be wonderful - the sense of space and imaging is fantastic as long as its not overdone.
