Interesting stuff - Led Zeppelin remasters

Posted by: Luxen on 12 January 2009

Hi@all!!!

Since I happily own and LOVE the Zep-Replica-box and I just read online that the "Remasters" (I have the 4-CD-version) may be not as good as the SHM-CD-replicas, I "assembled" the 4 CDs with the exact same songs, taken from the SHM-CDs.

After A/B-testing:
Boy, what a friggin difference.
Unbelievable.

Voice much clearer, more present.
Warmer sound all around, wonderful bass.
Guitars are less edgy.
Everything has much more depth and clarity, kinda like on vinyl....

Oh, one thing I realized too.
My NAIM CD5x really loves those blanks here.
They look like vinyl-records and the bottom surface is black.
The sound is much better than on "regular" CD-R´s...

Dear Luxen
was it the shm that was best? If so how do you order them?

Hi SJ,

yup. The SHM-CD was FAR superior in every aspect....

Very tempting, especially as CODA has the four extra track from the remasters issue.
BABY COME ON HOME, TRAVELLING RIVERSIDE BLUES, WHITE SUMMER/BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE, HEY HEY WHAT CAN I DO

Not sure I justify another box set this month, hope this stays around for a little while.

£10 cheaper in dollars.

wow, expensive. But for head banging rock they were tops, I remember my hormones racing and rolling down the windows in the car and screaming to the Immigrant Song on the radio. Tho I don't think I ever need to hear Stairway to Heaven again.

If you are bored with the Zep "Stairway" try to hear Rodrigo y Gabriela's take on it. Stunning!

No Stairway. Denied!

Hello,

How do you determine if it's a SHM version?
The thing is I bought a Japanese set a few days ago that looks exactly the same, but it doesn't say anything anywhere about being SHM.

Thank you.

Munch, aren't those teenage hormones starting up a bit early? I know kids get stuck on things, as I did. It's nice to have a hand in saying, gee listen to this, or this is where that came from. Wish I'd had a big brother/friend to steer me away from or towards good music.

Joe Bonamassa started playing blues guitar at 4.

"SHM CD" is printed in the clear bit adjacent to the central hole of the CD.

Actually Stu, it isn't! It seems to be on Blue Spec ones from CBS but not on most SHMs.

Have you had a fun day with the Keel going in?
