Hi folks,
I had the loss adjusters round to the house early on this evening - friendly woman, really took to the music I played her (my strategy was to demonstrate exactly why it costs so much to get a top notch hifi - she kept referring to the 'music system', and I knew she was sceptical until I gave her a taste of what a turntable can do (even the lowly Linn Basik can impress the uninitiated with ease).
Anyway, she seemed pretty happy that I wasn't trying it on (I'm not) and so I may be getting a new LP12 soon (I think, from what she said, that they will aim to replace like with like if at all possible - fine by me, really)...
So, I will be able to spec a new LP12. Thing is, now is the perfect time to offload the Lingo (undamaged) and get an Armageddon.
A few questions:
(1) How much is a new Aro and Armageddon respectively?
(2) Is the Prefix a worthwhile step for me (as a non-Naimie)? There's a chance I may get a 52 in time, but for now there is no Naim in my main system (other than Aro). What would I need interms of powering it?
(3) How does the Prefix rate against (say) the Lehmann Black Cube (or other well regarded phono stages)
(4) With £500ish to spend on a cartridge, maybe slightly more, what is the best match to an LP12/Cirkus (hey, it'll be a 2001 spec LP12, so I have no option)/Aro/Armageddon_or_Lingo/maybe_Prefix?
(5) How much to ask for a mint- Lingo, boxed and undamaged in the drop (it was on the rack at the time, and the circuit board & cables weren't stressed by the fall)? Any takers?
Ta,
John

congratulations in advance for your new lp12? what plinth are you going for?
if you are going for a 52 soon'ish, then i recommend prefix/geddon very highly indeed. i use that combination and home so know it well. i also know that in the context of my system, the lingo was no contest. i cant remember what preamp you have right now...
enjoy

Gents,
You do not see many ads for secondhand AROs or Prefix,so I was wondering what the going rate , as I am about to sell mine.Does the lifting device add any value ?

Just phoned the infamous Robert Ritchie for his thoughts on my situation and he's recommending the Aro:Armageddon:Dynavector route, which he can demo against the Ekos:Lingo:Arkiv route.
As far as plinths go, I'm going for a rosenut - something non-fluted, if that's possible in a finish other than black.
From speaking to Robert, my Aro may not be as dead as early indications suggest, so I might still see the Aro rise like a phoenix from the ashes...
With £3600 of insurance money (with some luck ;-) I can get a full-monty naimed LP12 and still have some change left over (given that my Lingo will sell for around £3-400 s/h)

Rob, I'm considering other options, but the insurance company may simply require that I replace what I had in which case it'd be a new LP12 (although I'm sure they won't quibble over me getting Armageddon over Lingo, as it's cheaper ;-) )
However, if they give me cash I intend to try to hear a P9, Well Tempered, Clearaudio, etc.

John,
What's the big hurry to ditch the lingo. Why not assemble a setup around the lingo and go from there. You would be in a better position to determine for yourself what is better by making an incremental change. ie phase 4 vs. 5:-)
IMHO I wouldn't trust a dealer that carried both tables.

Hi!
If I could get a Prefix/HiCap for my LP12/Geddon/Tok4/Troika (because I still don't have MC-Boards...) - what type should I take? What is the difference between K and S (and X?), and: can I use another cartidge in case I want upgrade the Troika, or is it only for Troika/Arkiv? Or do I never need to upgrade Troika? :-)
Thanks for any advice!

John,
What exactly do you mean..."I wouldn't trust a dealer that carried both tables".
This seems to me to be a very strange statement.
There are not many combined Linn and Naim dealers, let alone finding one that lets you demo the Linn / Naim options head to head.
