Music room vs. Hi fi corner

Posted by: Reto D on 04 October 2002

Hi,

Shouldn't there be much more post in the music room? Somehow strange that we all seem to be more interested in technical things than in what ought to be most important:

It's the music that we are aiming for, isn't it?

Just a thought..

Thought about this myself - I have rationalised it a while ago by deciding that what we like is SOUND as opposed to MUSIC - this might sound overly pedantic but hey. Improving the system brings fresh happiness from the same music IMHO.

Plus, this is a NAIM forum, not Deutsche Grammofon!

( yes I know of the NAIM label..)

I like hifi related discussion because I consider this forum as representitive of broadly common ground yet still with plenty of room for a bit of a debate ( stands/upgrades/products/lp's Vs cd's etc etc).

To apply the same to music offers less objectivity and quantifiable argument. ie, Elgar is shit, no he isn't, oh yes he is blah blah. Particular music is an individuals experience and proves to be much harder to articulate an opinion of within a two sentence sound bite.

The bottom line is that I do not think naim users are overtly concerned with the medium over the message, rather that they, by and large, know what floats their musical boats. That said I have picked up a number of excellent musical recommendations of late.

But the interesting thing, Simon, is that in the Music Room (as far as I know) there are hardly ever discussions along the lines of "Elgar is shit, no he isn't, oh yes he is blah blah".

This kind of argument frequently occurs in the Hifi Corner, where folks are slagging each other off over stands and other parafernalia. The Music Room is the friendly place on this forum with probably the highest information density.

However, as Nick once observed, you can post in the Music Room and garner maybe 50 views, while the silliest post about the best length of NACA5 will attract thousands of views (and some helpful advice of young master Nuño).

As the Turkish thread demonstrates, there's actually quite a bit of hypocrisy about this "it's all about the music" dogma. It's the way we like to think of ourselves - and Naim encourages us to do so - but meanwhile...

That was my point amigo.

I don't think so. Most of the posts in the Hi-Fi corner ask for advice or opinion. People want to know how to do something or what speaker sounds better etc....
You don't need to be told what music sounds best. You know what you like and that's that.
I think people are more likely to accept someone else may have a different taste in music, rather than accept that they get a better sound by changing their case fuses, for example.
There may not be threads like "Elga's shit", but wasn't there a thread about who was the most over rated singers?? That must have got some differing opinion

Elgar is shit.

Maybe so, but still you're saying this in the Hifi Corner, not in the Music Room.

Sometimes I feel that the HI-FI Corner is attempting to answer the "How many angles can dance on the head of a pin" type pf question while the Music Room feeles like the place to enjoy the music you have or will soon have. Both places are needed in the Naim world.

I prefer talking about Marco to listening to him wink

Alex

PS Elgar is great.

She says Elgar is great?

And she's your wife and full-time companion?

I have to say I'm really sorry for you, Marco. There's some really nice women around in Wales, but they're not the stick-figure Elgar type.

Alex,

It’s not like you to be loitering round here on a Sunday night!

Still, you can’t get to 2K+ without putting the hours in can you?

Of course he is, Alex. However you may or may not be aware this is a compliment in Wales.
