HDX ripping time
Posted by: docmark on 02 March 2009
I just received my new HDX, hooked it up to ethernet, and have been merrily ripping away. I was expecting 8 minutes per disc. I'd say, on average, it takes half that time. The HDX arrived with the new Service Pack update. Does this have anything to do with the reduced ripping time?

One would guess they put the 8 mins in as the time for a very full disk. A full disk is about 70mins of music. Obviously if your album is 45 mins then it will be a lot quicker.
State of disk no doubt changes things as well.

My HDX came at Christmas with the latest software. Has ripped mostly around 3 minutes per disc.

Hi docmark
What are your first impressions of the HDX - did you get your XPS2 yet?
Cheers

Ripping time depends of course on the length of the CD and the quality of the CD. When the CD has got some scratches it takes longer, but some of my CDs took quite a while to rip and the look perfect. Funny thing is that some of my 100% scratch free XRCDs took a long time to rip!

The original mechanism used required 7-8 minutes on average to rip a CD.
Dave Dever said they are using a new mechanism which has decreased ripping times. While the CD length does effect the ripping time this is not the reason for the overall decrease.

I heard the same from a dealer and his ripping time had halved to about 3 minutes

It's interesting - ripping times seem to vary from around 3 minutes, to a very long 14 or so on one particular disc. I've found, too, that my XRCDs take longer to rip than most other discs. Still, I'd have to say that most come in at about 3-5 minutes.
And Bob - so far, all I've been doing is ripping discs. I had to send one of my monoblocks back to Colorado for repairs - should be back at the end of the week. Then, I'll put the HDX in the system. Instead of the XPS2, I ordered a 555PS, but that won't arrive for a couple of weeks, so I'm told.

Got any serial numbers for when they switched? Would one that is ordered now in the U.S. have the new mechanism?

I believe this is the case. No clue about serial #'s. The best way to check is to have your dealer call NANA or just do it yourself. If Dave sees this post he may comment as well.

Hi docmark
Sorry to hear your system is down, but glad to hear you are getting the 555.
Cheers

Got my HDX today. It rips pretty fast. Barely enough time to sit down before I have get up and swap discs.
