Good Indian Restaurants in Kensington
Posted by: JamH on 14 August 2007
I am going to London at the end of the week and will be staying in Kensington ...
Would appreciate suggestions for really good Indian restaurants in the area [or elsewhere in London on a tube line].
Thanks
James H.

Not sure if it's still there, but I used to enjoy a tikka masala or three at the Bombay Brasserie, which is just south of the Gloucester Road tube station and around the corner. Also the Delhi Brasserie (no relation as far as I know), 134 Cromwell Road (I have the matchbook), a ways to the west, is decent too. I haven't been to London in a few years, so this info may be outdated, but I bet one of them is still open for business. Oh, and Khan's on Westbourne Grove (west of Queensway) and Standard Tandoori (nearby) are great places (Bayswater or Royal Oak tube). No guarantees though - it's been awhile; but those are the restaurants where I got my love of Indian food in the 80's. Not Kensington, more Bayswater-ish.
Now I suppose there'll be a bunch of replies telling me that these places a) no longer exist, or b) nowadays suck a golf ball through a garden hose. No matter; I'll want recommendations for a good curry next I'm in the Smoke.
Cheers,
Bruce
P.S. I read somewhere that chicken tikka masala is now the 2nd favourite dish or something in the U.K.; it's been my fave entree for two decades now. For once, I was ahead of my time!

James, to give you a idea as to what the forum thinks about this subject have a click on these two threads Curry - recommendations & Indian Food and Wine.
You could visit (as seen on TV a lot) Atul Kochhar at Benares Restaurant for some modern cooking or take a bit of time thinking about the subject and then concentrating upon one or two regions as Indian an indeed Pakistani based regional foods are so varied you may have to visit quite a few eating houses before discovering what you really like.

My old stomping ground is Paddington, and if you find yourself over there my old local was the Everest in Craven Road (after a couple of pints in the White Hart with a juke box with AC/DC on it - but they've just pulled it down
) . It has been great, then not so great, and great again, so not unlike most places I guess, but I haven't been there for some time now, although I passed by on Sunday. I've been going there for over 20 years. The prawn patia at one time was the best Indian food on the planet.
Otherwise, both the Standard and the Star Of Bombay on Westbourne Grove are supposed to be excellent. Go to the top of Queensway, hang a left onto WG and the Standard is a block down on the left. The Star Of Bombay is further down beyond the Pembridge Road fork. My best mate lived in Westbourne Villas for a while, but he's in Australia now so I haven't had an Indian meal around there for years, but it's a good part of town for them.
If you have time, take a look here

What Rasher said:
That's two votes; FWIW here is where I was initiated into the mysteries back in '83 or so. The other guys in Iain Matthews' band all loved this place, and they were curry-crazy.

A strong vote for Zaika, which is at No 1 Kensington High Street, just by the SW corner of the park.
Very very good

Thanks for all the advice ...
I am back from London. My nearest tube station [relative to the hotel] was Glouster Road and the 'Bombay Brasserie' was just beside it [thanks bruce and roy]. Had the Sunday buffet lunch [Sterling 22] and the Tuesday set lunch [Sterling 15]. Both excellent although I preferred the set lunch to the buffet [the bread was a bit cold at the buffet]. Very pleasant surroundings.
Also went to Zaike in the evening. It was very good [thanks jon].
Next time in London I will try to go to the Standard Tandoori [thanks rasher]. Any relation to the StanTan in Reading ?
