Best Mains Spur/s for Powerlines?

Posted by: goldfinch on 27 January 2009

Hi,
Finally I have decided to install a dedicated electrical circuit for the hifi. I have gathered info from other posts and have tried to find out which is the preferred way to do it. Of course, I am not going to DIY anything, but need exact instructions for the electrician.
Besides I am planning to use Powerlines so this brings some additional questions:

1. Multiple spurs vs single + power distribution block? I would prefer multiple spurs but I am afraid this can be too expensive in comparison to connect all the Powerlines to a distribution power block. On the other hand, using power strips may also ruin part of the powerlines benefits so...

Which multiple spurs set up is best? twin leads + earth for each spur, I mean a real independent spur for each component or multiple spurs from the same leads coming from the dedicated consumer unit? If this is the case, I suppose the electrician would know how to do it but is there any recommendation?

2. Does it matter to install the dedicated consumer unit before the main consumer unit or not? I found an old post about this http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/58019385/m/9262928807 but I would appreciate more details

3. Are this specs right? 10 sqmm better than 6 and 30-45 consumer units breaks?

4. I remember reading a post about directionality in mains leads, should I care?

I am afraid of the electrician reaction if I ask him most of these questions...

Regards,

Jose

I'm not entirely sure why you are in here actually - I would have thought it was a fair HiFi room query ?

I'm afraid I can't answer your questions personally, although I am interested in some of the feedback that hopefully comes - particularly regarding multiple spurs vs mains blocks.

Yes, I think I would be afraid of the electrician's reaction - they must think we are nuts !

Mind you, this is what I am up against ! Big Grin

goldfinch,

1) Naim recommended single spur to me.
2) mains comes in to a solid brass distribution block and distributes evenly to a separate hifi consumer unit and house consumer unit.
3)25mm tails from mains to meter to consumer units, then 10mm for all hifi spur.
4)only care if you can hear the difference.

I will take that as the mains guru recipe

No.

A single spur would be perfect if Naim markets some kind of Hyrda for PLs!

Thanks for your advice,

The PDL 3-pin plugs fitted to the New Zealand powerlines can be piggy-backed on top of each other.

Now all I need to to be able to afford a brace of them...
