modern caps, better sound?

Posted by: bryvincent on 11 July 2003

hello everyone!
my nait 1 had just been recapped 3 months ago, the old blue phillips caps were replaced with green slce caps similar to those used on the new 552,the smoothing caps were replaced with higher value(10000uf) bhc aerovox, and all of the tantalum caps were replaced also. after burning it in it sounds fantastic! it doesn't sound bright or lean like everyone out there says even with b&ws with its metal tweeter. i'm just wondering if the sound is different(better) than when it was new 17 years ago.i bought it second hand of course so i didn't know how it sounded when it was new.can the new caps change the sound of the amp or is it the circuit design that matter?

Bry,
As a matter of interest, could you please advise how much that costs? I too have a similar age Nait 1 in my bedroom system (which some days seems to sound better than the downstairs system!). Maybe I should do a similar upgrade.

Bry & Clive,
as I write this note my nait 1 (chrome bumber 1/2 width box)is being refurbished at Salisbury. I had mine from new many years ago where it sat between lp12/ittok/k9 (k18 now) and kans - it sure sounded good.

When I get it back I'll have the lp12 serviced and take advice about a high quality mm cart to hang from the ittok.

I'll let you both know how things sound.

clive,
the cost of the recap is almost the same as the cost of the nait itself (about CDN$300) but it was worth it. it sounds better than more expensive amps out there.

david,
there's nothing wrong with nait when i bought it i just felt that the blue philips caps were too old and to be sure it is up to spec. but after the recap it sure sounded better, the highs are cleaner and bass is tighter.and its good to think that some components from a $20k preamp is also in your $300 amp Smile
