classical question about component distance

Posted by: Philippe Dancause on 14 August 2003

I know much has been written about this subject but I haven't found an answer to my specific situation in the old posts...

Having just four shelves on my QS rack, with a CD2 and 102 (soon to be 82!) on the two top shelves:

Should I put the hi-cap on shelf number 2 and the 250 on the lowest one or leave a shelf empty and sit the cap directly on the 250.

Would the hi-cap and 250 interact and cause hum?

the spacers are 180mm long.

thanks for sharing your experience!

This may seem a quaint reply but if you have a 4-shelf Quadraspire rack and you have 4 shelves the I would put the CD on top, the amp beneath, then the Hicap, then the 250 on the bottom shelf.

Ususally you shouldn't place equipment on top of other equipment if you can help it.

I meant 4 items not 4 shelves

thanks for your reply. My question was probably not clear.

Would it be better to:

-increase the space between the cap and the 82 (and put the hi-cap directly on the 250)
or
-put the Hi-cap on its own shelf, closer to the 82 (and affect its performance)

would the first option induce crosstalk between the hi-cap and the 250?
How does proximity with the hi-cap affect the 82?

thanks again for your advice

If you can, it's better to give things their own individual shelves.
I would find it hard to claim seriously adverse performance from placing the hicap on the 250, which would probably be better than on a preamp, which are always a tad sensitive.

Have a relaxed listen and see if you can hear a difference. if not, don't worry.

Or you could get a Fraim Wink
