location of fm transmitters in uk

Posted by: GC on 10 February 2004

ive never been happy with the performance of tuners in my system despite having a g17 and a nat02, the nat02 has now gone and has been replaced by a quad fm4, seems to sound similar but i certainly dont get the analogue experience other people seem to have, how can i check that the aerial is sited properly and on a much more basic note, how do i know its pointing in the correct direction? i live near manchester and i think the aerial is roughly pointing east....

Have a look here

It also doesn’t follow that the nearer you are to the transmitter the better, spoke to someone at Naim ages ago about this and one near the factory was noisier that one further away.

Don't know where you are but I'm in Poynton near Macclesfield and reception here is crap.

many thanks martin - think i'll have to sit down and figure all that out!
hi bob - sat in alderley edge at the moment, live a few miles away in altrincham, i think your probably right that we live in an area of poor reception......im just pretty scared of getting up on the roof to try it in different directions....

Gus,
I reckon your closest high power FM transmitter is at Winter Hill just off the A675, 4mls NW of Bolton. That would put it NNW of Altrincham. There is a low-power relay at Saddleworth as well. Might be worth trying redirecting the antenna in that direction. If it's presently pointing E you're probably picking up from the high-power transmitter at Holme Moss NW of Sheffield.
