no TV sound thru dvd receiver?

Hi all,
I have just connected up my new panasonic plasma (pz80 model) to my onkyo all in one dvd reciever (lsv-501).
so far i have only connected them via HDMI cable. on DVD there is sound but on tv - silence.
I am assuming i need to connect another set of cables here?
i have consulted the manuals but unfortunately the panasonic is written for simpletons and the onkyo is written by simpletons

No, you shouldn't need another cable. HDMI carries sound and picture. It will be a setting on your receiver (or possibly TV) that needs changing.
Oh wait, I'm assuming you are routing TV via your receiver?

The HDMI cable is carrying signal TOWARDS your TV... and no TV I've ever heard of sends the sound from it's internal tuner out over its' HDMI input.
My guess is your Onkyo will probably have other inputs (optical, digi coax, stereo RCA) and your screen will almost certainly have at least one form of output (I'd guess RCA pair or optical).
So, if you want the TV's internal tuner to feed the sound (that matches the picture it's delivering to the screen) to your Onkyo, you'll probably need to make that connection and tell the Onk to play the audio from whichever input you've connected up.
In essence my n-Vi does the same stuff.... and if I used the TV tuner I'd have an RCA pair going from my TV to the n-Vi.
Instead I have a cable box feeding picture to the TV, and an optical lead to the n-Vi to allow it to give me sound to match my cable picture.

Mike1380 is right. I made the assumption that your TV signal was coming from an external box. If you are using your TV's own tuner, you need to run audio back to your receiver using a separate cable. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

thanks guys! i have picked up a set of rca leads and will give that a go!
Mike, the Onkyo is my budget version of the n-vi (the thing costs all of £300 with sub and speakers although i have ditched the bundled speakers for something a little better) and for the money i am pleasantly surprised at the results. Picture is very good and the sound is acceptable, although i might change speakers and see what happens.)
