NEW POP QUIZ

Posted by: BigH47 on 28 February 2005

The US POP QUIZ seemed to be petering out. So I suggested we "open" it up to general pop/music. It was suggested that I get it started. Me and my big fingers!
Ok here goes:-

A group who could also be a farming system. Current and not particularly well known chartwise.

Howard

I have added this question to the end of the US one as well.We could stick with the new thread or ask for the original to be re-named? Others may have switched off the original thread.

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love?
Posted on: 11 March 2005 by Chunny Nochubb
Not Gloria Jones - The song was written by the original band probably around the time of release early 80's and they were men.

Are we talking about You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) originally released by Uranium 235 and later by Dead Or Alive?

Sorry Nigel

Wrong sort of tosser, the one I was thinking of is probably so described because straight men are jealous of him.

bass player, Danny Thompson, backed Lou Reed on Transformer

I hate to be picky but:-
Only Herbie Flowers and Klaus Voorman are credited as bassists on the Transformer notes.

Howard,

You are quite right, I realised yesterday that I'd got it wrong. I hoped no one would notice. Its what happens as you get older, your memory starts playing tricks. I promise to check all my references in future.

I'll remove the evidence to cover my embarressment.

Sorry Andy
I didn't want to make you feel bad. It's just I was going with Lou Reed and Transformer and then couldn't make the next step.

Do you think it would be a good idea to change the name to NEW MUSIC QUIZ so people will feel free to post any question, as long as it's not too obscure.

Pop for me encompasses a wide range of music, not just chart stuff but perhaps calling it 'music' removes any ambiguity.

What do you think?

Andy – put some punctuation in because I know very little at all about what “New Music” is.
I will take the liberty of posing my “American Folkie” question because I am unlikely to get another question right and will also be busy during the day from Monday so ask for the two questions to run in parallel:-

This is a Midwest born singer songwriter who was both a great guitarist and singer. He died aged 36 from leukaemia in 1984. He was a great friend of one of the “New Dylans” and wrote a hit in 1972 for the son of one of the “Pre-Dylans”. Who was he?

Howard/Chunny,

On second thought, let's leave the title as it is. 'New Music' has too many other connotations.

I think "pop" can be stretched to include most music forms.Although I think classical should have it's own thread if it raises it's head.
IMO.

I thought the singer of this band had a very good voice (most people think that he is a complete tosser) but that their music ranged from good to completely inane.
So what was the name of the band who released the original and better version of the single?

The song is Money's Too Tight To Mention by The Valentine Brothers. Covered by Simply Red and that tosser Hucknall who looks like a fat Charlie Drake!

Was the American 'folk' singer Steve Goodman who wrote City of New Orleans? I can't remember who for though.

Andy

2 questions posed 2 correct answers (obviously 2easy) no one yet has posed the question what happens now:-

Rich - I agree with every word of your answer.

Andy - Spot on - Arlo Guthrie recorded City of New Orleans - (I thought that the original was better) and John Prine being the "New Dylan" I referred to.

I suggest first one to the question post takes over.

Female US singer and songwriter who fronts a band made up of mainly English musicians. Wrote a song covered by a black US disco diva in the early 80's. Name the songwriter, her band, the disco diva and the song.

I hope it isn't Chrissie Hynde, the pretenders, grace jones, private lives because I don't want to set another question.
Posted on: 13 March 2005 by Rich Cundill
Unlucky Chunny you are correct!
Posted on: 13 March 2005 by Chunny Nochubb
Bugger and I did not even check on google at all. Can someone else pose the next question as I am busy from tomorrow not living up to my name and so won't have time to monitor responses.

This one-time lyricist for a seminal English prog-rock act also wrote songs for this veteran pop diva. Name the writer, the band, and the diva.
Posted on: 13 March 2005 by Rich Cundill
Pete Sinfield, King Crimson, Celine Dion

<sigh> You are correct, Rich, although the diva I was looking for was Cher.

Hard to stump youse guys!
Posted on: 14 March 2005 by Rich Cundill
It certainly is hard to know the level of difficulty to pitch them at.
I'll have a think and maybe do another one in a bit.

Cheers
