Linn Tukans for second system: placement??
Posted by: onlythat on 24 January 2003
Hey there-- just picked up a pair of Linn Tukans for a possible bedroom system. Problem is, there isnt much bass. The stands, granted, are pretty cheap-- better ones are on the way-- but there is not much bass at all.
So do you put these speakers up against a wall like the kan, or are they a free space design?? I have them in free space now. Is this the problem?? CDX/72/Hi/140 BTW. Also they seem to like higher volumes to come alive. Opinions?

These are nice speakers, and can do bass. Keep them about 6-10 inches from the back wall. This is what Linn wants us to do, and is what worked best for me. Put them on some very stable, no rocking, medium to heavy wheight stands. Pull off the rubber surround and tighten the driver screws. Also, best integrated sound comes from soildering two plugs on to the A5, instead of using the jumpers. If you do use the jumpers, use the top treble holes to plug the wire into. Hope this helps.

What Lennart said. Tukans, like Kans, work best on light, rigid stands. The Kan II stands (which Linn still make, though the price is absurd) are perfect. Sound Organisation also made stands that were just about as good.
Also, I found best results with the Tukans at the distance from the wall what Lennart specified, but also toed in a little; that seems to allow them to breathe at the same time as the close wall proximity helps the bass.
Enjoy them - they're a very underrated speaker.
Cheers
Keith.

Agree with above. I have tukans on sound org. stands (the ones with a sloping front). I'm constantly surprised at the bass these speakers can put out - a good source helps. FWIW I have mine about 8 inches from the back wall pointing straight forward - any closer and I think they get a bit boomy. Can't recall if I noticed much of a difference between toed and straight ahead.
Great speaker - I've had mine for over 2 years and never felt the urge to 'upgrade'.

The Linn Tukan manual recommends a placement of 2-12 inches from the wall and 5-10 degrees toe-in. I've used them for years closer than that on a SO wall bracket, toed in 5 feet off the floor with good results. This was in a large room and I had no problem with lack of bass.
I now use them on SO floor stands in a HT system and they are now toed in 4 and 5 inches from the wall.
Make sure the link plate is on nice and tight, Linn supplied a special wrench for this purpose.
