CDs I only listened to once, despite rave reviews...

Not intended as a slag off session, just a reflection on varying tastes and the surprise when a much anticipated album just fails to meet up to your expectations.
The list could be long, but I'll start with just one -
Smile by Brian Wilson

Try Damien Rice's "O" again.
I had the same reaction after the first couple of listens, then for no apparent reason it gelled. It is very, very good.
Still - took less than the 7 years it took me to get into the superlative "Life is Sweet" by Maria McKee

OK, this is really interesting.
Here is my irritated list that almost completely overlaps with what has already been mentioned
Blue nile - boring
Arcade fire - misery rock
Jeff Buckley - whiny
Very odd

Edwin - Rilo Kiley?!?!?!!
"More Adventurous"?
One of my all time favourites.
I play it endlessly. Just goes to show it takes all sorts...

I often find that buying old 'classics' that I never got around to the first time can be very disappointing, probably to do with being out of context with the era it was produced. However a good old album should still be able to stand up now.
Anyway some oldie classics that have disappointed:
Jesus and Mary Chain - Pschocandy
Pixies - Doolittle
The La's = The La's
Grateful Dead - Live Dead
Daft Punk = Homework
DJ Shadow - Entroducing
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue.
Dr Dre - The Chronic
I've got to admit I always try to give things several plays, and agree that many that do not appeal initially go on to become favourites. However in the case of the above I think they are all poor.
For the bottom 4 this is really just because I don't like this type of music, and in an effort to extend my boundaries some things just miss the mark.
For the top 4, I am at a loss why anyone ever though these were good. I like this type of music but just think these are overrated mediocrity (at best)

Somebody gave me Trick of the Tail and I only ever played that once - I thought it was really weak compared with Lamb Lies Down and the early albums - never bothered with Genesis again.
Greeny - I still play Live Dead, very occasionaly, but prefer Anthem of the Sun.
