sbl foam grille cleaning?

Posted by: manicatel on 20 October 2005

Just doing a bit of housework. Thought the grilles could do with a spruce-up. Is it ok to rinse them under water? I have found tiny dust sized fragments of the foam on the carpet. Does this mean the foam grilles need replacing, & if so how much does this cost.
Maybe this should be included in the faq section on cleaning naim stuff?

Stop worrying.

Yes you can soak the sponge in luke warm soapy water and leave it to dry naturally. It will look very smart afterwards.

If the grilles look ok, then they most certainly are ok, so relax and enjoy them.

A timely post - and reply. I was just pondering how to go about cleaning the foam grilles of my Briks, having removed them to re-attach the loose velcro strips.

Sounds like a dunk in the bath with soapy water will do the trick.

Soak it in the bath, then rinse it through and let it dry slowly and naturally

Do not hang it on a line but place it vertical aagainst a wall and it will dry out in a few hours.

The main thing is to be gentle with it.

Hmm

Just a slight note of caution, seeing you mention tiny dust sized particles of foam on the carpet.

Depending upon the foam used, in my experience, over time, foam can and does de-nature i.e. it rots and crumbles.

I've had this experience with numerous foam earpads for headphones, and a similar foam lining for some B&W speakers I had years ago.

They got to the stage you mention of tiny crumbs on the carpet - an attempt to then clean them led to them literally crumbling and falling apart in my hands.

I managed to get some similar foam used for airconditioning to reline the grill which was a composite of a weave material with the foam backing, but SBL's could be a real problem if this happens, as the speakers require the foam for correct phase response, and one would need to enquire of Naim if replacements are available.

I'm probably being overly cautious, but thought I'd mention it.

Lets know how you get on - as an owner of SBL's now 8.5 years old, it's a concern i have for them in the future.

Best Regards

Thanks for that john, I guess foam will eventually go brittle/rot/perish, & this may well be the early stages of that process. I may ask my naim dealer how much replacements are, just in case. Or maybe adam knows?
