Mercury Prize Winner! Who?????

Rising hip-hop star Speech Debelle has won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for the best British album of the year.
Her debut Speech Therapy, released in June, has not appeared in the U.K. Album Chart yet! but its sales are expected to get a huge boost from her win.
For anyone who likes rap/hip hop etc it's on Spotify!

As I said in the other Mercury thread, I only know who she is cos I saw her on the news, talking about illegal downloading and its effect on (her own) record sales.
Only 3,000 copies so far, probably sell at least another 3,000 every day this week now!

people who like jazz, soul, gil scott heron-esque afro-centrics should should be touched by it too.
great record. very happy for her and Big Dada Records.
glad that no 80s revival bad hair-do's won it.
what the public don't realise is that people who pick the winner are writers in the music media. If the so called 'favourite' Florence And The Machine gets 3 stars everywhere, it isn't going to be the album of the year is it?! The Mojo review summed her up. One for the future. But her debut album isn't going to change the world.
Speech on the other hand...

I listened to Speech Debelle's video on her site - pretty good I thought. Not usually my thing, I'm always open to new sounds. Much better than Flo's Lungs which I bought following comparisons with Kate Bush... decidedly average imo.

really pleased for her, she was a homeless kid who has written about some of her experiences. Great news.
