Vinyl - How easy
Posted by: Merto on 13 December 2005
I have no doubt that vinyl is the media of choice for genuine musicality but I currently run a CDP only and as such have no vinyl collection. How easy is it to build a decent collection of vinyl from on line retailers and how do they compare pricewise with CDs?
Cheers.....

Merto - what kind of music do you like? Try the Freak Emporium and you'll get some idea of how it compares.
Most of my vinyl is over 20 years old and still sounds good - though I'm happy enough with CDs for most new stuff.

ROTF, musical tastes are very varied. I have been home all day today and have listened to the likes of Sons and Daughters, Frank Zappa, Wagner, Moby, John Martyn, Lemonheads, Salif Keita, Barb Jungr, Babyshambles, Chillie Peppers etc and now have on Buena Vista Social Club! I think that counts as "varied"!
Thanks for the link, I will have a rake around in there.
Im just a little hesitant to consider a TT with the associated cost and set up issues without having much to play.

It's been a while since I've been vinyl-shopping but until I got my CD player these places kept me happily in vinyl though it would be fair to say prices for new stuff tended to be higher than CD releases, not least because so many single CDs have to go onto a double-LP.
Happy record-hunting. Steve
Simply Vinyl - not cheap but they almost always have some kind of offer on.
Diverse have always given me good service
Amazon have a small selection.
eBay is a good hunting-ground for used records though of course you'll be buying blind in terms of quality. That said, I've never had a problem.
And last but by no means least there is the pink place - are we allowed to link to it from here?

Cheers for the pointers guys, I might just start collecting as and when and then in a year or two from now, once I have something to listen to, splash out on a TT....

Took me 20 years for 1000+ records. The problem now is that new records have a prohibitive pricing eg 20.00 euro for a new record and so on. 20 years ago you could buy every given record for 7 (sometimes 5) euro!
If you buy records on ebay you pay more for s&h than for the record itself!
