Linn Adikt ??
Posted by: David Stewart on 12 July 2002
Is there anybody out there who's had a chance to audition the new Adikt cartridge from Linn. If so what's the verdict??
Any feedback would help as I'm wondering whether to shortlist it as a possible replacement for the ageing Kanine on my LP12/Ittok!

I too have a LP12/Ittok and I'm very interested in hearing more about the Adikt. There doesn't seem to be any technical info on Linns web page.

If I were you, I'd try to find an immaculate K18. My reasons are twofold. Firstly, it seems with Linn that as prices rise, quality falls* and secondly, the K18 is a MUCH MUCH better cartridge than a K9. I know it's still an AT at heart but the sound is truly better(if bright).
* Ask a Kan II user who's tried tukans or
...an LK280 user who dem'd LK140s or 240s
or the poor 'barik owner who bought Keltiks!
......Or try a Ortofon based Reson- My friend has one in his Axis and swears that it beats his CD.

I agree that the K18 is far better than the K9 but there are practical problems in getting one - e.g. the unavailability of new stylus units. I'm sure there's some company that will recondition them, but surely it's worth the wait to find out how good the Adikt is?
It's funny that a few of us have K9s that are on their last legs. I have listened to only 1 or 2 LPs in the last four of five weeks because my K9 has turned nasty.![frown](/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif)

My K9 is not quite knackered yet, but having recently acquired the Ittok, thought I should treat it to a new cart.
I'd already short-listed the Dynavector 10x4 and ClearAudio Aurum Beta-S (possibly the DNM Mica) for auditioning but was wondering whether the Adikt might be worth a listen?
I believe Andrew Randle was going to try one out so maybe he'll read this and respond.
Come in Andrew!!

The Adikt is sadly not out yet. I am about to receive a cartridge from the first shipment, it was due on the 8th July. However it hadn't arrived so I asked Linn Harrods (where I ordered it from) on Thursday and they found that Linn are currently boxing the first shipment and I should hopefully receive it next week.
I haven't heard it yet, which may seem like blind faith, but I will get it installed and if it doesn't do the Linn thing (which I doubt) then I'll ask them to take it back.

Thanks for coming in on this and clarifying the position. I was under the impression the Adikt was due for launch in mid June?
Perhaps you'd post your findings on the forum when you have had a chance to assess the Adikt's performance and reach some conclusions on it.

Andrew,
Please put us out of our misery -
Has your Adikt arrived yet?
a) No. B***dy delivery slippage!
b) Yes and it's so good you're too busy listening to records to post.
c) Yes and it's so bad you are too busy searching for a replacement.
(tongue very firmly in cheek!)
Steve.

I wish I was out of my misery. The answer is still (A)... and I've already had words with the Linn Showroom at Harrods.
The excuse is that July is one of their busiest months due to the sale season. However I know that their installer has had the cartridge for at least 3 weeks.
Insult to injury and I've heard that Billy Vee has got four in stock right now. Sadly they can't come out and install it this week. This puts me on a bit of a gamble, should I wager that Harrods will get it installed this week, or should I cancel it and go with Billy Vees or maybe Grahams (who are closer).

Hmmmm! - strange we've heard no more from Mr Randle, perhaps he's sunning himself somewhere it doesn't rain all through the summer?
Or perhaps he's still anxiously awaiting his new toy having been let down by yet another rolling 4 week delivery promise?
Just to help him recognise it when it arrives and to reassure others like me who are rapidly coming to the conclusion it's just a figment of the Linn marketing dept's corporate imagination, here (I hope) is a piccy of it

Andrew,
Sorry to hear that it was a), I was hoping it was b) 'cause my K9 is going to bark its last at some point.
Perhaps you ought to set Mr Parry on them to teach them the error of their ways.
From what I've read on the forum he seems to have the 'Michael Winner' touch when it comes to customer service. (In case anyone mis-construes that, I intend it as a compliment to him, not an insult!)
Regards,
Steve.

Are you saying that one or more of your local shops have the cartridge, but that you have no access to it until one of them installs it on your deck?
Why don't you just peddle your bicycle over to one of those shops, pull out your wallet and purchase one. Take it home, install it, and get back to us on how it sounds.
An Lp12 owner who doesn't know how to set up his own cartridge, tune his own suspension, and charge the bearing well is paying (over time) far more than he needs to for what, in my opinion, is the greatest marketing "slight of hand" a high end company has ever committed.
OK, I'm done now.

Because the Ekos arm must be removed from the LP12 and placed in some kind of jig in order to install a new cartridge. Otherwise the bearings would be knackering during the process. At £1600 it's a risk I'm not prepared to take
Such are the advantages of the Aro.

You most certainly do NOT have to place the Ekos into a special jig to install a cartridge in it (though you DO need to remove it from the table). The Linn arms are not china cups. You just can't be stupid with them. That means never tightening down the cartdige nuts while the arm is mounted on the table. This $%$^%$^%$# the bearings.

Then would you like to buy me the necessary Linto MC stage![wink](/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)
I intend to go the whole-hog and buy an Arkiv-2, but the Adikt is an interim measure (replacing a dodgy K9) until I scrape the money together to buy an Arkiv and MC stage.
Besides which, a well-engineered and sensibly-priced cartridge should work well in a top arm and deck.

I am curious that you have a £1600 arm and are considering installing a £200 MM cartridge. Surely this negates the advantages of the Ekos?

Ekos and a cheap but adequate MM will be better than Ittok anything.
FWIW. I presume the Adikt will be at least adequate, and it should fit nicely.

To be fair I have not experienced Harrod's Linn capabilities but the comments I've heard have not been brilliant.
However, I can vouch for Billy Vee and specifically Ian Ridge's ability with LP12's and would certainly recommend that you speak to him. Ian is an ardent Linn-ite (I'm sure Ivor adopted him or wrote him into his will or something).
Cheers

Thanks Jeremy,
The thing is, when it's installed I'll take a listen to it. If it's crap I'll tell them so, and they'll have to take it away.
In a way I have now placed some faith on one manufacturer's way of doing things, as so far they have matched up with my musical expectations (in a domestic situation). This is after hearing a whole raft of equipment at shows, dealers and my home.
