The Persuaders. Unfortunately the title sequence and music was by far the best thing about the show......

I've watched from day one. So the original music is still the best for me, not the same for Doctors though.

The original Dr Who music is the work of the greatest exponent of electronic music ever. Although credited to Ron Grainer, it was created by Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic workshop. Delia was the pioneer of electrosonic. I've written quite a bit about her on the forum at various times.

Other than Delia's unsurpassed genius; my favourite theme tune is from Follyfoot - The Lightening Tree by the Settlers. Hated the programme - loved the theme. Same can be said of White Horses by Jackie "Rupert the Bear" Lee - what a great song.

Of course Ron Grainer's work is excellent too.

Next to the Dr Who theme (original), this is my all-time favourite TV theme (yes, even more than The Persuaders, which I also love and have on a treasured John Barry LP!)

Thank you Youtube. I didn't think I'd ever hear 'Jam for a World in Action' again.

And thank - of course - ROTF for pointing me to White Horses, you've made a grown man cry, I don't mind admitting! Thank you.

When I first started seeing Dr Who it was Tom Baker; I've lately seen all new series together with my son (almost 13 years old and utterly enjoying the series) and I do like David Tennant best. As for the theme: I found various episodes on the net and played them all; they are very alike, though a bit brushed up to standards every time.

This Week was Sibelius's Karelia Suite (wonderful music) - there's a good version by Sir Keith Emerson and the Nice, but I also like the version from the Boston Symphony Chorus and Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis.

Nantucket Sleighride (which I also have on a nice LP) was 'Weekend World' as opposed to 'World in Action' which was a specially recorded piece called 'Jam for a World in Action' by Jonathon Weston (so Granada told me once when I asked if it was on any records or CDs [No]).

That's the one I was thinking off Karelia Suite.It's on a Charisma sampler by Rare Bird if memory serves.

Mountain underrated band IMO.

For me, the very best TV theme song by far is Tom Waits' Way Down In the Hole used on all five seasons of one of the greatest shows ever, The Wire, a different rendition each season. They're all great, but my favorite is the first season's as sung by The Blind Boys of Alabama, with the great Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp. One of the deepest, most soulful pieces of music I've ever heard. I like the fifth season's version, too, as sung by Steve Earle, who also acts in the series (and does a great job, too).

Another big vote for Robinson Crusoe. Also The Onedin Line (nice bit of Khatchaturian)and slightly more up to date the theme to the excellent Canadian tv series 'ReGenesis'. Also Noggin the Nog.

Nostalgia is all very well.

Great description munch but i haven't a clue what the programme was.
Only programme with knobs(and tits) in it I saw was Californication, music fron Nick Cave amongst others:-
