Uniti Guru system setup questions

Posted by: ggus on 13 January 2010

At last my Uniti has arrived. I can now set up my system but have a few questions as to how to best put the whole thing together properly. Everything is bought is mail order because any Naim or Guru speaker retailer are many miles away. That's right, I bought the whole thing without ever hearing it.
Anyway, here are my questions:
1) How far should these GURU speakers be apart?
2) Does furniture near the speakers matter that much--hey, it's in the living room?
3) How close can the Uniti be to the speaker without things going terribly bad?
4) What CD would you drop in first?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you are using the QM10s?

There's a setup guide at:

Installation Guide

I've used QM10's for over a year and they work well if you follow the guide.

4. Bryan Ferry - Mamouna - "Chain Reaction"

This should instantly convince you that money was well spent, otherwise the system isnt set up properly!

4) Martyn - Krdl-t-grv

Had me as soon as the synth line comes in at 0:35, to be honest; and when the bass drops at 1:03, you'll have forgotten all about 1), 2), and 3).

Have fun with your NaimUniti (!)

Nice track, but how do I call the radio and ask them to play "Krdl-t-grv"?

In which part of the world are you?

ggus,

even if you came to an arrangement with your dealer to have the kit sent to you, he should still be able to advise you on set-up via phone or e-mail. It's not ideal, I grant you, but that's the deal you've entered into here.

I think that a phone call is in order here at the very least.

Thank you all. I'll post a picture of my set up that will start tomorrow. I live in Maryland, USA, far from a Naim dealer and really, really far from a GURU dealer. I bought my Uniti new and my GURUS were demos. I have Naim speaker wire.
Once I figure this part out, I'm going to add a Mini Mac as a server. I think I'm really going to love Internet radio--and will one day add a turntable. The CD is nice on the Uniti, but, I suspect will be used less and less as I get use to computer audio. I made my decision searching the 'Net and remembered the philosophy of Naim in the late eighties. It still appealed to me. I used the wisdom of this forum to make my final decision. No American audio would let anyone take home of system for trial unless, I suppose, it were very high end--and on approval.
Listening to a system in an audio shop is basically a waste of time because of the huge difference their highly tuned rooms make in the overall sound. My system will need to be integrated into the living room, with sofa and chairs and coffee table, etc.--you get the picture. Again, thanks. This is going to be fun.

So I'm not alone in buying a uniti 'blind'! Smile

(I did take some convincing to get a powerline with it - made the dealer very happy though)

Half a year on and still loving it Big Grin

Congratulations Ggus, you've got yourself a stunning system there and the Uniti and Guru's literally define 'the whole being greater than the sum of it's parts', both excellent products in their own right but simply outstanding together.

We have many clients in the UK with exactly this system and the beauty is that it does not take much effort at all to get the absolute best from them.

Please feel free to drop us a line if you'd like to have a chat about set up.

Cheers

Do take James up on his offer Ggus, he set mine up for me and knows a thing or two about the Gurus.

Just what we work our bollocks off to to avoid, Naim dealers selling new Naim products on the internet!

Over to you now Naim Audio Ltd.

Gordon,
Please remember that there are not that many Naim retailers in the USA, considering our country is three thousand miles wide. You can drive nonstop for three straight days on a superhighway and still not make it from the east to west coast. If I had a Naim dealer close by,I would have visited. Sometimes there is no other alternative--for customer and retailer. Of course, I could go Naim-less, but what good will that do anyone? Sorry if I touched on a sensitive area--no harm was intended. I suspect
matters are more complicated in Europe where Naim is more easily available.

You are correct but your dealer should be addresing your questions NOT a public forum, that is point, that is what his margin for if not, then internet selling.

Well that may be so Gordon. But this is a friendly place in the main, and many contributors here are happy to help if they have experience and irrespective of financial gain.

Peter

That may well be the case but as a dealer you know what your responsabilites are and so should his dealer!

Well, I set up the Uniti and Gurus. It was sketchy at first because the Uniti screen didn't come up--but after turning it on and off a few times, things got better and I played my first CD. Being an American with a British system, I thought it appropriate to play my new CD Raising Sand by Robert Plant and Alison Krause. I think with a little work and some speaker stands instead of dining room chairs, I'm going to like this Uniti/Guru combo. I know one thing for certain, I really like Raising Sand.

Concerned about the screen thing! Confused

Anyway, any ongoing problems, contact your dealer.

In the mean time play loads of music and run everything in and I'm sure when the time comes for stands and set-up tips, you will have plenty of help here.

I think you made a wise choice ggus, I'd have no fear buying as you did. You can figure it out and do give dealer a call if you need assistance. I"ve bought used kit online and learned to set things up myself, and that was multiple black boxes lots of interconnects etc.

I use the Kudos S50 stands, 60cm tall filled with sand for my QM10s. Guru produce an MDF top plate that can be bonded to the top plate of the Kudos stand. This has holes which the rubber feet of the QM10s fit into which holds them securely and gives a neater profile. Overall this gave a great foundation for the Gurus - the sand firmed up the bass really well.
