about N-vi

Just spending my Sunday here, but does somebody have an idea about the price for a N-vi?

I will see the finnish dealer in a week, but, in the meanwhile..

I believe it's around £3,000 but do not hold me to that, i just remember reading it somewhere.
I think the n-vi is going to have alot of admirers.

Archie

I saw a prototype of one of these beasts at Grahams last week (see separate thread) and spoke to Paul Sthenson (Naim's MD) and Roy George (Chief Designer). I think they're both confident that the n-Vi will be tremendously popular. From what I saw and heard, I think they're right.

Prices are not finalised, but I got the impression that, on release, the basic unit will be around/just above the £3,000 mark. The add-on DAB module and scaler unit (I don't know what that is, although someone did try to explain it to me) will take the projected total cost up to around £3,800.

Grahams Hifi were quoteing £3,000 for the basic n-Vi. For that you get dvd/processor (Dolby/Dolby pro Logic/DTS)/preamp/5xPower amps each rated at 75 W into 4 ohms (ie similar to a 150 and 175). It has about three inputs and three outputs

For an extra £250 they will put a DABtuner in for you.

Nobody mentioned a scaler to me. But for an extra £500 or so, I guess its possible.

Delivery expected before Xmas

Cheers

Any idea if it is going to be Multi Region?

Or if it can be modded to be so?

Wouldn't be able to say on the forum but look around in the forum history if you want to delve a bit further.

Just seen this in action this evening.
5 x 90w power amps (High perf Tripath Class-T)
DAB + clock & alarm is £350
Scaler option is the same scaler option for the DVD5 and will be £1000 and is said to be better than an iScan HD+.
n-Vi uses a low noise switch mode power supply - is this a first for Naim?
Pre out is only for the front left and right so you will not be able to upgrade the center or rear amplification.
DVD performance is meant to be on par of DVD5 as same transport + processing etc
CD performance on par with CD5i I guess as built around DVD5 engine.
I think it's basically a DVD5 stuffed in a bigger box with an AV processor (not sure if AV2 type performance or not) and 5 x 90w amps.
DVD5 is £2350 so £650 for the extra AV processor and amps sounds a bargain to me.

I would love to see a stereo only version of the n-vi, sort of a dvd5 and 5i in one box. I guess the market wont support a non surround sound product like this but if one were available I would buy it.

Am I right in assuming that the pre-out for the front L and R channels is of the processed variety and not just stereo?

Depends on the source material / media: if it's a two-channel CD, then it's a variable line-level stereo.

Does this mean you can "up-grade" an n-Vi by adding a suitable external stereo power-amp such as a 250 or a 300, or a pair of 135s (plus a pair of speakers). If so, can this external amp (and speakers) only be used as a stereo amp or can it also be "integrated" with the in-built 5 x power amps to provide a 7.1 DVD replay system. Or what ????

Cheers

There is only a pre-out for the front L and R channels on a DIN socket.

So if you are processing say a dts disk does the dts processing for the front L and R get output on the pre-outs with the other channels on the speaker outputs or is it always just a direct stereo output?

Plus is the unit region 2 only?

I played with it at the show (London), it had it's own room; not bad for a 'one box'.

DINS
The DIN L&Rs do exactly the same as the internal L&R amp. So if you play a CD it is true stereo (unless you select PLII NEO:6).
When playing DD or DTS it is the L&R (not a mix of all 5 channels). It is for integrating into Nait5i, 202, 282, 252, 552 systems or just for a regular power amp upgrade for more slam.
(connects the same way as my AV2)
And I belive if the L&R is set to 'external' the internal amp turns off.

REGIONS
They said it has a DVD5 inside, so I assume it can be de-regioned in the same way.
I did my DVD5.

EXTRAS
And the DAB/FM tuner can be added at any time.
