Naim News page:

This week sees Naim talking about its update of the NaimUniti all-in-one audio player to offer playback of digitally stored files from iPod, gapless playback of WAV and FLAC files and full remote control via iPhone / iPod Touch.

Following on from the update to 24bit/96kHz earlier this year, this latest set of NaimUniti updates to the gives the listener even more and brings its feature set into line with the UnitiQute.

Enabled for iPhone control app
NaimUniti can now be fully and remotely controlled via the n-Stream iPhone app, the same app that can be used to control UnitiQute. The app is available at the iTunes app store.

Gapless playback of WAV and FLAC files
Gapless playback is now added to NaimUniti. It will stream / play WAV and FLAC files from any suitable UPnP™ device or USB-connected storage device.

Digital iPod connection
Also like UnitiQute, NaimUniti has been given Apple authentication enabling front-panel USB connection and access to iPod-stored digital media files, bypassing the iPod internal DAC and enabling a digital output for optimised performance. iPod devices can now be connected to NaimUniti via its front-panel USB port using a standard Apple USB connector cable.

Existing NaimUniti owners who are interested in updating their units with these new features should contact their Naim retailer.

The updated NaimUniti will be at this weekend’s Manchester Sound & Vision show, where we will be demonstrating a full UnitiSystem set up.

Distributed Audio section?

Suppose it was distributed from an Audio company...

Jan - has there been any talk or signs that an Ethernet upgrade for the nDAC is even considered by Naim? Wouldn't they need to fit an Ethernet socket into the circuit layout and casing as there is no provision for it at the moment? Or did you just throw it in as a loose comment?

Thanks
Daniel

They have ... it's called the NDX!

And no I don't want to start discussing how the DAC chip in the NDX is (technically) lower spec than the DAC chip in the Naim DAC and how Naim (through Malcom Steward's comments) have indicated it can be upgraded with the Naim DAC...

That's what I thought. So do you think that the nDAC is where Naim want it to be for a long time coming or can we expect physical changes to it any time soon? I'm asking because I plan to buy one soonish...

Don't quote me on this - I've been wrong before - but I would suspect that the Naim DAC will be around in it's current form for the next few years. There maybe a higher end version of the NDX with using the 1704 DAC chip or other technologies to go alongside the NDX and the Naim DAC, but I don't think the "basic" DAC will have facilities added to it - it will always be SPDIF + USB for memory sticks and iP*d

Thanks! I would have been surprised, given Naim's rather long product cycles. But then again the HDX has been upgraded somewhat. However, when I spoke to Naim UK regarding some warranty related issue, I was told that there will be a software update for the nDAC at some stage. Not sure what this would entail, maybe that comment was related to the software handling iPhone/Pod connectivity... I didn't ask.

There was a software update for the DAC which added iPad playback compatability?

Don't understand Phil - are you saying there was an update to allow iPad playback, or there will be an update or shocked that someone was suggesting that it's been updated?

May it was this announcement:
quote:
Drum roll......the UnitiQute has been awarded Product of the Year in the Systems category at the recent What Hi-Fi Awards.

The UnitiQute has been awarded Product of the Year in the Systems category at the recent What Hi-Fi Awards. The ceremony, held at London's Dorchester hotel, saw Naim pick up three awards with NaimUniti and the DAC both receiving awards in the Systems and Digital Media Players and Accessories respectively. The NaimUniti was named Best Network Music Player over £1500 and the DAC was voted Best Premium DAC.

Got it !

"When we started the Naim DAC and Network Bridge project we did so because there was nothing available on the market that combined the fun and ease of use of a well designed user interface and digital storage library with the no-compromise performance of a high-end DAC and frankly, we wanted one. We wanted it badly and so too did our customers. Two years later there still isn’t anything as complete as the Naim DAC/Bridge setup and once you get your hands on this system, you’ll see what we mean."
