CDsII/XPS vs CD12

Posted by: Kevin-W on 29 November 2002

Has anyone out there demo'ed a CDSII/XPS against a Linn CD12 (not that can afford either, but I'd be interested anyway)?

Indeed, has anyone actually heard a CD12, and how does it compared to a fully-fit LP12?

Yep, it's inferior IMHO. Very hifi sounding indeed, the sort of thing to impress audiophile America, but not really my cuppa tea. CDS2 is a very different sound, doesn't sound so hifi or detailed but more together and musical.

It's been quite a while since the audition, but I do remember that as Top Cat expressed, the CD12 seemed more detailed and "HiFi-ish", the CDS2 more present, musical and engaging. What a treat to hear the Naim, and at 2/3 the price, clearly prefer it. It was my first Naim listen and purchase. I was hooked!

Kevin,

In Answer to your question, My brother Martain has had a DCS2+XPS and a Linn CD12, while I agree with the following posters comments on the Hifi'ness of the Linn, with definiatly greater detail, the Naim CDS2 indeed has more musicality, he eventuly decided on the CD12 as a transport (much better option) and a Wadia 27ix decoding computer, the result absolutely stunning resolution and musicality to die for, and a pre-amplifier thrown in as well smile and all for a lot less than a new CDS2+XPS and NAP552, the Linn was purchased for six thousand, and the Wadia for four thousand pounds (used bargins of coarse) and they make the most beautiful music together, musicaly of coarse.

Kind Regards David
