Expereince with Allaes

Did I miss something with the Allaes.
I use a Nait 5 with my Linn Kabers at home and today dem'd several CD players to replace the Arcam 7SE I presently use.
At the start of the dem, the dealer put a pair of Allaes on the back end of a well burnt in Nait 5.
My opinion - YUCH!!
Maybe it's just me, but they sound thin, no soundstage, no bass at all. If I hadn't known better, I could have sworn I was listening to a midi system. I know the standard answer is "but what about the timing".
My response would be "what timing, couldn't hear any bass to be able to spot the timing".
Lets just say that I won't be trading in the Linns soon.

"Very interesting Captain" (with a raised eyebrow, of course)
My experience of Allaes is just the opposite.
A friend runs them active off 250's and they produce a full warm and detailed sound, with the best soundstage I have ever heard out of a Naim system. The CD player is a Rega transport and an Audio Alchemy DAC.
The room plays a big part, of course.

I have demo'd the allaes at my dealer's place as well, driven by nait 5. I thought it produced a well balanced sound, with plenty of PRaT. The sound is very fast indeed. Any more bass I think will muddle the mid and hi.
I suppose if one is used to other speakers make, they might immed feel a lask of bass. But prolong exposure will probably rectify that first impression. I remember years ago when I was still using all the exotoc 'hifi' brands. When I listened to the SBL at my dealer's, I had the same disatisfation feelings about them. As far as musicality is concerned, no other speaker I have heard comes close to the SBL at that cost.

The Allæs should not be used with anything less than a CDX/82/180, imho.
They are revealing speakers, and the only pair I've heard to date that would make me part with my Naos, working with my current electronics and stands.
Regards,
Steve.
It's just a pleasure to hear music as it was intended to be heard.

I don't believe the Arcam and Nait 5 are up to the job of powering the Allaes. The linn Kabers were a better speaker for this set up.
I would say that the CDX is the minimum requirement for the CD and the 82/hi/180 is the mininum amp for the Allaes.
If it was my system I would look at upgrading the Arcam CD player first.

If the Allaes are not against a rear wall, they will still provide amazing speed but otherwise they may not appear to be anything really special.
Even away from the wall though, they should sound more like NBLs than a midi system!

Mr S
I have Allaes with CDX,112/150/FC2 all on Hutter.
I have had the system about 6 months now and I am delighted with it. The good news is that, even now, the set up seems to continue to improve.
I have my speakers about 9 feet apart hard up against the rear wall and they fill that space and the whole room with a sound that, to me, is wonderful. I would describe the sound as very natural. They have cracking pace and timing and a full soundstage.
I have not yet tried adjusting the position of the speakers to see what improvements I can make as I wanted them to be fully run in before messing about with them. So there may be even more to come.
I demoed them with 102/PSC/180 and, to my ears there was a touch of harshness so I decided against that. I have heard them at Naim HQ with some serious black boxes and they were out of this world!
I think the set up you heard was lacking something.
Cheers

I'm thinking of changing speakers 9see recent Spendor thread), so I went to hear a few things at my local shop, Hawthorne. Although I was really there to compare a cd5 v cdx (another story completely), so to really let the front end shine, they were driven by a 52/500. I thought the Allae's sounded really great-not at all cold, but full, fast, and cast a broad swath of rich sound. Now, wonder whatthey will sound like with my 112/150???

Well my cdx/xps/72/180 really makes em sing!!
In my room (converted cellar)they are 7" away from rear wall and about 8' apart (nothing in between)and with the pot set at 9 'o'clock I can feel my internal organs starting to move!So something aint right with the above mentioned system
