Am I going to have to get my snow chains out?

Finally, some festive weather. Not good for all I know.
Who has snow?

Not here yet - West Sussex. Last time I put snow chains on my motor(Skiing in French Alps) one of them snapped and put hundreds of chips on the paintwork of the car above the wheel. Won't be doing that again in a hurry.

I am counting on my Quattro to keep me in a straight line if need be. It doesn't help stopping though.

And a good 8" here at the top of the hill.

Rear wheel drive - will be staying in the driveway if bad. Not made for snow.

5 series. Nice car but not in the snow. Always quite fancied that A6 Allroad motor. That would be fun I imagine on the mountain roads.

During the '68, (I think) snows I had a mini van, front wheel drive didn't help as the ridge of snow in the middle of the road kept lifting the front wheels off the road, I had to wait for sump to melt the ice before proceeding.

There is something better at being worse in the snow than a Beamer? Like Lontano, my 5 series will remain in the garage if we get snow.
Then again, we are not forcast any here until Sunday and even then it is described as light. I am sure the Met Office knows its onions on this...

Crikey,
It's mid December and you guys have had more snow in England than we've had in Southern Ontario (Canada) this season so far.
My 12 year old A4 Quattro has her winter rims and snow tires installed, so we're ready when the white stuff begins to fly !

Not much snow forcast for us this weekend. But we will have a high of -5 today. Fortunately the S3 also has the winter wheels and tires ready. Isn't global warming great.

Considering we are on the Pennines and I thought the East coast was going to get most of the snow we have a fair covering, probably 10-15cm and more coming down. It is nicely frozen too. It has laid on the A roads, well at least at this early hour
I thoroughly recommend a Lotus Elise in these situations.
Sporting.

Left the Alfa at home today - fat tyres and lots of HP is not a good combination on snow. Took the Panda instead - what a fantastic car for snowy roads - passed many BMW's with spinning wheels - but I wish people wouldn't drive right up my backside when there's no way they would be able to stop if they had to...

Risking being accused of instructing elderly maternal mammals in ovate extraction by partial vacuum.
If you do not have a Traction Control System on your car you can get some equivalent function when you have one driving wheel spinning and the other stationary by slightly depressing the brake pedal to slow down the spinning wheel and passing the rotatipn to the stationary wheel - best attempted by using a small amount of throttle with the brake pedal partially depressed.
As you are all petrol heads this will not be news - but it might be.....

How to drive in snow in a Lotus Elise (without TC).
Plan A; Place eggs between your foot and the brake/accelerator pedals.
Drive without breaking them.
Plan B; Borrow wife's car!

Or in a rwd car, pull the handbrake on a notch or two.
Don't Saabs have the parking brake on the fronts for this reason?
