assessing alternative upgrades...

Posted by: ken c on 17 December 2003

i am considering a number of upgrades to my system, but the following are the top 3 alternatives at this point:

1) 52/sc1 to 252/sc2
2) cdsii to cdsiii
3) nac52 to nac252 and xps1 to xps2

i obviously need to listen to these but in the meantime, would be interested to hear from people who have been down this road as to which alternative yields the biggest bang for the buck.

another question: i have had my cdsii since mid-2001. to those folks who have had their cdsii's for a lot longer, what have been the typical maintenance/service costs?

many thanks

I would save your money for 4x135 but that's not whast you asked was it

4x135's are not completely off my radar yet. but i am swayed by a source first approach -- hence the focus on front end. of course, with the luxury of time to listen to more alternatives -- i would also include 135's, 300's etc, but, you know the rest...

The CDS3 is significantly better than the CDS2 (which is still a fine player) and is where I would spend my money.

i suspect so -- thats why this is definitely one of the options. but the cdsii is so good makes you wonder why bother with the III. again, i guess there is no substitute to listening for myself.

alex g: I found that the XPS2 is a significant upgrade on XPS when combined with the CDS2.

my dealer says other people have reported that xpsII/cdsii takes you half way to cdsiii -- Confused Confused

nick: ...It cost me £1,000 to do the upgrade
..

i guess your 52 was fairly new?? mine is 1999 vintage, and its going to cost me a whopping 2.5K to do the upgrade. mucho money!! maybe i should buy a rotel...

nick
whos your dealer £1k to go from 52 super1 to 252 super2
fuck me ill have some of that

ken
ive in the past week gone from cds2 xps1 to cds3 xps 2 for £3k my cds2 was 4yrs old and had a new optical unit a few months ago
there is a difference!between cds2 & cds3 and not just the money
id get shot of the cds2 while you can still get a decent return
ive looked around and prices are fluctuating
but hey what about those 4 lovely 135's Wink

yes, nick, tell us who your dealer is so we can flood him with our 52's for 252's Big Grin Big Grin

neil, you make a lot of sense. my feeble reason was given i listen to a lot of radio and vinyl (although at one point i almost decided to get rid of it to save space!!) plus CD -- that i would get most benefit from a 52 to 252 upgrade. also a lot of folk whose ears i respect seem to be happy with such an upgrade.

my cdsii is, what, 2 years old -- and i dont seem to be getting much in upgrade value from it. given that it sounds fab, i just thought perhaps there is no rush to change it.

but to be honest with you, i am keep changing my mind as to whats the best way fwd, hence this thread...

4x135's ... ??? Red Face Red Face

Ken, I've just heard Tom's system and given its similarity to yours I'd be very tempted to take his advice.

Alex

PS My advice is to buy more music.

Ken I would also seriously consider looking at the following options:

1. New SNAXO reported by many to be a massive upgrade
2. New 250s which many say are superior to 135s

You need to hear these options too
