IBL - Changge speaker or try Sub?

Posted by: bigtrak on 27 May 2003

Hi,
I have CD2/72/hicap/250 with IBL's (MKII's) on the end. I would like some more bass which the IBL's seem to be lacking. Would you suggest hanging onto the IBL's and buying a SUB? I have read that the REL Strata III works well but if anything seems massive compared to the size of my room which is approx 13ft X 13ft, has anyone used any of the smaller REL's? My other option is to flog the IBL's and get something else. I am limited to having my speakers close to the back wall (20cm away max) I know of some Epos ES11's but have read that these need to be placed quite a way from the back wall. Does anyone have any other ideas? My budget is about £440 - £500. I listen to a varirty of music from Rock to folk to Hip Hop. Any suggestions will as always be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Flog the IBLs to generate more cash. purchase SBLs.

If you like the IBLs you'll love SBLs

Have you tried moving them closer to the rear wall. In fact as close as you can get them given the cable connectors/crossovers on the back. Give it a try, it costs nowt.

I Think Gary may have the answer. If lack of bass is your only problem then maybe try some sbl's.

But a cheaper solution is to try the epos speakers and if you don't like them sell them

I know what you mean. I tried IBL's at home a long time back, and could get more bass out of a pair of Kans. Lovely speakers though; and if you want more of the same; SBL's would seem to be the way to go.

They'll get down to about 30 Hz in room and go louder of course. If you want bass extension below that, a sub is the way go.

And don't forget; that a well set up and integrated sub will also open up a chunk of 'acoustic' you were previously missing; giving you more spatial information at all frequencies.

Here's a pic of my new REL Q400, which is not too obtrusive, but works best in a corner. I personally prefer the sealed box designs as opposed to the 'ST' range.
