Best Hendrix CD Remasters

Posted by: 555 on 08 February 2008

I recently ordered the Experience Hendrix (Hendrix estate) "Remastered from the original 2-track mix down master tapes" 2007 Universal Japan releases of ...

Are You Experienced

Axis: Bold as Love

Electric Ladyland

EL arrived today, & sounds better to me than my old copy which is the 1980s 2 CD German Polydor issue.

I noticed that these three albums have just been released in Japan as remastered shm cds. Has anyone heard these &/or made comparisons with the JPN remastered estate releases?

Also can any one recommend other good quality (in HiFi terms) Hendrix CDs?

Cheers - John

Thanks for that!

I'm always cautious of live records, esp' old ones because they are often poor. Have you heard your Hendrix favourites on a reference system?

IME if they are from an OK master they are brilliant listen on my more humble system, & in the car Cool

My personal favourite Hendrix gig CD is Live From Winterland Vol 1+2. Just about stands up on my 555, but it is the best concert quality I've found.

I recently bought

The Ultimate Experience

because I'd been misled that it's HDCD. The two live tracks at the end are from Berkley, & sound relatively good quality so I'm tempted to try that CD Smile

I have a humble system but for me the 3 CD's i mentioned especially the first two are great. They must sound fab on a reference system!!!!!!!!!!!! but i'd be guessing. For me the quality is good enough for you to hear the absolute genius of hendrix on little wing. A song about his mother - pure emotion from an electric guitar. Not matched as far as i am concerned. And yes the sound quality is great! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly the master recordings of live events from the era leave much to be disired, so I think you'd be disappointed Frown

I hope you get to hear Winterland; it's very good. There's also a box set of four CDs called stages which is worth hearing IMHO.

I would agree that the best version of Little Wing is on Hendrix In The West which for some inexplicable reason remains currently unavailable. Quite a few folk think that it is one of his finest moments guitar wise including me.
