Movie disc player for the perfect family?

Posted by: Foot tapper on 22 October 2008

We are blessed in the Foot Tapper household to have 2 family members who are passionate about music (foot tapper + miss foot tapper), while 2 family members are into movies & all things visual (Mrs foot tapper + foot tapper junior).

As is the way in the normal course of domestic diplomacy, Mrs FT spotted my passion for music at an early stage, so we have a lovely Linn/Naim/Proac system to eke the best out of our many and growing CDs & LPs.

FT, being of the male gender, is naturally slow to recognise the many subtle hints that Mrs FT has dropped over the years about wanting a good TV. Eventually however, even Mr FT couldn't miss the comment "can we get rid of that HUGE TV and buy a nice big flat one, dear?"

Being the perceptive chap that I am... I realised that Mrs FT wanted to get rid of the 28" CRT TV, so researched and eventually acquired a 37" Panasonic TV, Sky HD+ box and a £200 Panasonic DVD player to fit in between our much cherished Proacs.

Domestic bliss resumed for a further 3 years, until now.

Mrs FT says that the Sky box produces great pictures but our DVD player is unacceptable. Admittedly, we are starting to get bands of darker colour across the screen when we play DVD movies, but to me that just adds a little character to the picture....

So now it is imperative that I find a suitable player for movie discs, to replace the £200 Panasonic one Confused.
We don't need it to play CDs - the CDX2/XPS2 seems to do that quite well Smile

All our movie discs are DVDs so far, but apparently Blu Ray compatibility is a good thing to have for the future. FT Junior has a PS3, but that is providing sterling service in another room.

We don't need surround sound, as the 2 channel Naim/Proac system seems to pretty darn fine (though moderate improvemens such as a Superline for the TT wouldn't go amiss hint hint etc.)

We do need a player that will play movies well, with a good picture for a 37-46" Plasma/LCD TV (yes, Mrs FT thinks that the TV is a bit small now, gulp Eek) and half decent sound to route through the hifi.

Budget-wise, I was thinking in terms of £500-750ish, in the hope that this might be realistic. Marantz seem to have a well reviewed one, the DV7001(?), while lots of Arcam ones appear to be available at knock down prices (e.g. DV137)

So, any recommendations for a suitable movie disc player spring to mind?

p.s. how do I insert a photo of the system, so that everyone can see the position of the TV, loudspeakers etc in the room?

Hi FT.

It makes sense to go for a BluRay player. The picture quality over standard DVD is quite pronounced and well worth going for. Assuming you still wish to play your existing DVD collection then a player capable of doing justice to these and of upscaling to 1080P would also be pretty essential; not all BluRay players are good at this!

Given your budget I would suggest the new Pioneer LX-71 would fit the bill admirably. It's only just out so you might struggle finding one. Cheaper alternatives would be the latest Panasonic BD-35 at £260-ish or Sony S550 at a similar price (I think). The Panasonic makes more sense because it will integrate with your TV, allowing them to work together.

Regarding posting photos, you first need to place you piccy on a photo hosting site - I use Photobucket but there's plenty of others - and then post its link onto the posting you're making. If you click on the picture icon on the top of the Forum posting screen you can paste the link in.

There is only one: The SONY PS3. Test one and you will believe.

Thanks Tonym. So Arcam & Marantz players should be skipped then.

Re uploading photos, I'll investigate this Photobucket. Do I need a special permission from a Forum Administrator to show photos too?

Tuan, thanks, a most concise recommendation. We allowed FT Junior to use the PS3 once, but it took us 6 hours to lever him and his mates out of the living room. They had assumed ownership of the TV & music system for their latest war of death/murder/violence PS3 game.

Hence, the PS3 is banned from the living room.

Hi FT,

My suggestion would be to wait a while longer before you spend upwards of £500 on a BR player. I'm looking for a BR player too but I want one that will at least match, if not better my Toshiba HD DVD player for upconversion. The consensus seems to be that nothing in the BR field comes close. I'm also still not sure BR will not end up as the next SACD and sink. As I was on the good ship HDDVD when it went down I'm low on life jackets.....

With the size of your screen a good DVD player with upscaling should give a very acceptable picture indeed - cost £100 - 150. While my HDDVD player (XE1) playing HDDVDs and my PS3 give a nice sharp picture it's not so much better that I can't easily live with upscaled DVD. If you do decide to get a new TV make sure you get a Pioneer Kuro plasma!

Dear FT,

As things stand at the moment, it makes little sense to buy a player which does not play bluray discs. The only time this may make sense is if Mrs FT has a large DVD collection (i.e. hundreds of discs). If that is not the case, then go with a bluray machine.

The best available appear to be Panasonic and Pioneer. Buy the very latest models you can since these contain the latest bluray profile 2.0 software. As it happens, this is the time that the ranges are being revamped. For example, the Panasonic BD-50 is available at knock down prices but this is because the later model is in the wings, expected in the next 2 or 3 weeks. £500 will buy you an excellent model which will even compete with the likes of the Arcam DV137 for DVD picture.

Even a PS3 will do this incidentally! The problem with the PS3 is that you can't make it region-free (or at least I haven't found a way to do so yet). If being region-free is not an issue, then also consider the PS3, although the £400 - £500 machines are probably a bit better in the analogue audio output department than the PS3 which is really not that hot in that respect.
