BBC Radio4 Theme Tune
Posted by: Analogue on 20 March 2006
Hi all,
There is a public outcry that Radio4 is going to scrap the 5.30am theme tune.
To 'cushion the blow' the BBC are releasing a cd of this theme, on the 27th March 2006.
Regards
Chris n

The "Theme" is dire crap, in my view. Many's the time when I've fallen asleep at night to Radio 4, only to be jolted out of my slumber at 5.30am with a pressing need to switch to something else.
Now, if they could just get rid of Women's Hour and You And Yours (and cut back Today to one hour), the station would be able to come out fighting!

And bring back real 90 minute plays regularly!
Actually, I shall miss the Naional Theme, but everything moves on.
Generally I enjoy the lack of ditties surounging news programmes, and very much regret the way the World Service is goin in this respect.
You and Yours would certainly be better if it was half an hour as it used to be, but surely most people don't listen to all thre hours of Today, do they?
I also miss the Financial World Tonight, which used to sit naturally with the ten o'clock news (World Tonight), and Parliament.
It is still a fantastic service, which with Radio 3 we would miss if it were ever revolutionised, and modernised. Gradual evolution is the way, and the way it I going. I don't find the humourous programming as funny as I once did, but, hey, I am getting older, so that is likely the reason...
All the best from Fredrik
PS: I saw this coming a couple of years ago, so I recorded both the National Anthem and the Opening THeme one day, onto CD. It bears study actually.

What's wrong with Womans hour?
A definite sign of aging, Fredrik!

I like the afternoon plays, Thinking Aloud and other bits and bobs. All in all it's a station that could only exist on the BBC, couldn't give a stuff about the starting theme though.

Dear Basil,
I did not say that I did not like Woman's Hour. That was Graham! I just never listen to it, that's all

I just mentally dial it out and wait for the talking to begin. As far as prosaic, chocolate box, mid 1940’s nostalgic fuzziness goes it takes some beating. If it’s going, it’s a sign of the times. If it’s being replaced with something more “modern” I can just see the middle England blood pressure going off the scale. But quite honestly, who gives a flying…..
I hope the disk release is available on 78.
Cheers

I remember the outcry when they tried to axe the Sailing By theme tune. One of the most cloyingly awful pieces of music I have ever heard. I wish they had stood their ground on that one!

If only. Of course, it's all Diana's fault: they cut the music after she died (out of 'respect') and it never came back.

Its political correctness gone mad. Further proof that the BBC is a hotbed of pinkos.

I agree that since moving from p.m. to a.m. Woman's Hour is best avoided, and that the reduction in length of afternoon plays to about 43 minutes means that they are best avoided also. I like the Radio 4 theme, so recorded it a while ago but will have to investigate legal purchase. Some of Radio 4 in night is fine, but usually local BBC radio offering Five Live is better. Radio 3 in night is sometimes also good thankfully too for sending one to sleep.

Lordy! Was it that long ago?
I'm sure I still have the original music on 1/4" Tape... Somewhere...

It was due to be phased out in May or June, I believe. Roll on that day!
