I started this thread to have a place for the rude, crude and inadvisable.
So come up with a barbaric topic that will anger everyone, or just fling a few snide insults at the unsuspecting.
Got manners? Leave them at the door.
I know you have it in you :-)

MAKE ME !

The sound of a CD is superior in every way to the sound of an LP. The mechanical barriers to enjoying music on an LP are many, led by the need to change sides, especially on classical music.
And the difference in the sound of cd players is minimal, having everything to do with presentation, and nothing to do with the reproduction of music.
So if you're smart, you will buy a relatively inexpensive BluRay player and play all your silver disks on it. You won't be missing anything musical, just a lot of HiFi foolishness and expense.

You're right Mike.

Well, we're all in agreement then, that's good.

Well, I guess there will be no Halloween on the forum.

Chaps
I propose that the Queen shall be taken along with the entire Royal family and locked up in the Tower. There they are all to be executed on any trumped up charge and their heads shall be displayed on pikes outside Traitors Gate until they rot and wither away.
I also propose that Margaret Thatcher be immediately crowned as Queen and that her son, Mark, becomes next in line to the throne. I further propose that all monies and estates from the Royal family are sequested to the Thatcher family and that they shall be imune by statute from any form of tax.
Also I further propose that Maggies head appears on stamps until the Royal Mail is no more.
I like that idea quite a lot.
Regards
Mick

It is the padded cell. But this will be my last pointless thread.
Posted on: 29 October 2009 by SC
I think we'll be the judge of that....
Posted on: 29 October 2009 by mikeeschman
Well, at least I'm going to try to make this my last pointless thread.
How about you?
How about you?

I haven't had time to consider it - I'm too occupied trying to figure out if my interconnects and speaker cables sound different when plugged in the opposite way round....

If everyone did that, every bloody hifi forum would collapse overnight. 95% of what we say has already been said a dozen times before.
We would be far better spending our time either chewing gum or gawping at the entrails of a goat trying to predict the winner of next years Grand National.

The entrails technique works well for picking new peices of HiFi gear, and for deciding who to vote on.

That don't need to hear that to enjoy the music, the overall presentation differences of their kit, are more telling to some/most people.
Hence more audiophiles (horrible word) probably buy more cables etc than, music scores.
You'll have to be quicker than that Mike

After I wrote it, I thought it would be too mean for even this thread.
But honestly, one assumption I made about owning quality gear was that it would automatically make the owner more curious about the music itself. That is not the case.
I just don't understand why.

I agree Mike, maybe that's why your threads stand out. I have a limited knowledge of music , I can, given time make a tune on a guitar, and as such judge a guitarists performance. That said I can tell if other musicians are playing badly, but I can't necessarily tell if they are playing wrong.
A live performance, one expects a difference(unless you are listening to a Steely Dan concert, apparently).
This is based on listening to (my) music, which includes, if memory serves only 3 classical performances.

That might be true with the NaimDAC.

I'll bet you could learn to hear what is there to hear, all of it, in a few weeks, using the internet as your instructor, and without taking a single note or learning to read music.

As Sir Paul said about musical notes: "They're all good'uns; it's just that some are good'er'n others".

For the same reason it doesn't make us want to become experts on engineering, acoustics, or physics.
Some enjoy music from the lifeless, soulless perspective of academia. Others listen to their gut and shoot from the hip. Some do a little bit of both. Some play music, and do it well, but only have a working knowledge of theory.
Music theory and ear training are not easy disciplines, so some will not have the intellect, or the time and resources to dedicate themselves to a lifetime of pondering the circle of fifths and humming thirds in any mode and key.
The beauty of art in general is that one does not need to know how to paint with oils, calculate wind loads, blow glass, or develop film (or in my case, study Simandl), in order to both appreciate, and understand it.
The one's who do feel contrary tend to be the pedantic, arrogant, worthless people we call "critics".
I have never once felt that a lifetime of playing music and studying it in college brought any more or less enjoyment of music on a visceral level. My love of music runs much deeper than that.
