Should we ban the gutter press?
Posted by: Sniper on 12 April 2010
The UK has so many fine national daily newspapers that I often wonder why we tolerate the gutter press at all. The Sun, The Daily Mail etc. they all appeal to the very lowest common denominator - people who should not be allowed to vote or even breed. There is virtually no news content, the editorial comment can be understood by 10 year olds and they full of gossip about half witted so-called celebrities. Why don't we just ban them?

Sometimes I wonder if this forum should have a vote ban system.

Sniper.
Press censorship, voting rights removed for a huge chunk of the population and forced sterilisation for the same group of your fellow citizens.
Do you want to take a deep breath and think about those suggestions again?
I have no idea who the 'we' is in your post. It does not include not me.
Bruce
(I'm particularly offended by your suggestion that some reading material hould be banned. I think everyone should be allowed to read everything that is published-I'm sure you agree)

I'm all for censorship. As long as it is me doing the censoring. I would ban the gutter press, Big Brother (oh the irony)and punk rock.

I think I do detect a whiff of irony; thank goodness!

Good man. Although I think the forced sterilization of millions is worse than a bit of censorship.

Bruce would that include material that incites people to persecute people whom do not share their values?
Would it include sexually offensive material?

I don't care one iota about the so called gutter press, add to that BNP news, red star bugle or my religion or you die monthly, plus the goss & girly mags, or even HiFi mags. The trick is not to buy it.
Freedom of the press is absolute paramount as part of the whole big picture for genuine freedom for all in this country, & believe me having seen most of the rest of this world, the UK is ahead of all other countries by some margin.
Why is the gutter press so popular - because some people actually like it, some buy it just because it has a good football or horse racing section, some people buy it because that's what they have always bought, some people don't think about it or maybe think about anything.
Most press will set out their style to the what they believe is their market sectors (or the general populations) whims & beliefs & voting preference. And that includes Telegraph, Times & even the FT.
Finally - the comment in the original post "people who should not be allowed to vote or even breed"
Sniper, you are either mad, or are deliberately (distastefully) trying a wind up, or are a true follower of a well known Austrian from the 1930/40's. I just hope its one of the first two, at least we can continue the banter in the manner its intended.

I struggle to believe that Sniper was seriously contemplating Eugenics.

I think "we" should ban Sniper's book...
Posted on: 13 April 2010 by Mike-B
Can we add TV adverts to the banned publications list
Or better still Snipers idea about sterilization might actually be better.
I am thinking about Go Compare, Cillit Bang, double glazing ads with deranged actors who shout at you, all baby products & baby actors & soft fluffy dogs adverts. This ban suggestion does not apply to meerkats who should be encouraged to join a meerkat eugenics club & go for it

The cillit bang ads should definately be banned imo - as for the meerkat I have to admit I am a fan on facebook.

Of course (lest anyone get confused)this is all just banter as far I'm concerned. Having said that I really would ban the cillit bang adverts.

The gutter press have a purpose and that is to show how good the non-gutter press is.
Cillit Bang boss cleans up.

You are very obviosly aware of just how much that guy has given away to charity - aren't you?
The advert may be crap ( but nowhere near as irritating as go compare, whos author needs to made to listen to it endlessly for the rest of his life for crimes aginst humanity) but it has, for a change, done an awful lot of good.

Sniper dear chap.
What ho!
Your recent threads have all been quite fabulously incendiary. And more interesting because of it than most.
Have a beer on me.
If you are old enough to drink.

I support the legal right of the press to be as offensive as it wishes within the Law on libel/indecency and discrimination. I also support anyone's right not to have to buy or read it.
The 'gutter' press is popular. That does not make it 'right' of course. However I don't think for a minute that the british public is stupid enough to believe everything it reads in the papers, or is unable to apply some critical faculties to what is presented. I also think that much of the tabloid press does indeed not so much form as represent the opinions of many-much as a woolly Guardian-reading liberal like me may find that distasteful. Papers are 'tribal', they know their audience and how to appeal to it.
In truth I find some of the so-called highbrow press pretty woeful at times. Take the media reporting over MMR safety (by my beloved Grauinad in particular) where bad journalism actually served to create a major health panic that took years to resolve. The fact that these papers have a smug whiff of superiority makes it worse in a way.

Indeed you have.
I look forward to reading about it in the next edition of your book.

I don't think any foreign national should be allowed to own a British newspaper.

Why?
I cannot imagine it would be enforceable anyway but I'm not sure why in principle it matters.
We would not have a free press if we somehow restricted those allowed to contribute.

Still, why don't you invent a title for the imaginary tome and I can rack my little mind searching for it.?
Oh how you could laugh.
With yourself.

I just don't think it is acceptable to have the Independent owned by a former KGB spy and an ex-Australian owning several papers with massive circulations who uses them to promote his own self interests in global media. Murdoch had to become a US citizen to be allowed to own any US tv stations. We should have the same laws.

very good Mike but without foreign owners your lot would be doomed. Even the red knights are a front for Japanese money.
