NBL no longer listed on Naim price list
Posted by: John3 on 21 February 2004
Picked up the Feb 04 Naim price list at the Bristol show and noticed that the NBL is no longer listed. Printing error or has it been dicontinued/replaced?

Hope not it was my next 'target'

It wouldn't surprise me, I don't think it has been a raging success.

That would be a shame I think the NBL is the best speaker naim do in terms of size/quality ratio.

They could do the replacement earlier! I just ordered the Alto Be. They'll make me feel bad, if the NL2 comes with a 12" bass driver and better tweeter. Which means DBL is next. I hope the brilliant bass driver stays.
Maybe it's time for the "olive to black" change of the boxes, too.

I asked the question whether the NBL was to be replaced when I purchased my sistem last year and Naim stated they had no plans to replace the NBL for a long time.
The NBL is a great speaker and it would be a shame to see it withdrawn from the market.

NB, What are you feeding your NBL's and how do you get on with them?
I'm considering them as my next move (active with Snaxo 3x 250)
Graham.

Graham,
I have a pair of Neat Ultimatum 9's not NBL's, they are fed with a CDS3/XPS 252/Super/300, have a read of the "Jaw" thread to see why I chose the Neats.
Regards

I use NBL's and am feeding them with 3X250's (Olive) and I simply LOVE them!
One day, NB will see the error of his ways
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

NB,
Sorry, I have been keeping up to date with the 'jaw' thread, honest
Blythe,
Do you find the NBL particularly sensitive to positioning?
Graham.

Positioning is critical in as much as they need to be equally positioned.
If one is 1cm further froma wall than the other, they can create a horrible "hot spot".
I found I had to get the tape measure out to be sure they were excatly the same distance from walls - not only distance from the back but also from the sides.
Mine are only about 13cm from the rear wall and are either side of a chimney breast - that distance is critical for a good sound.
I haven't tried them further from the rear wall so can't comment on positioning fromm that point of view.

I am very happy with the Neats and have the satisfaction of having heard both in my listening room.
I personally chose the Neats but I can fully understand why someone would choose the NBL's. They are a wonderful speaker and making my choice was hard work. Its going to take more than the current NBL to make me change my Neats.

And, plotting a curve through the price points of SBL & SL2 and extrapolating therefrom, we can expect the new & improved DBL/IIxi to cost UKP 22,752.38p...
Great -- I can use this again, then:
Er, or not.

The demise of the NBL is apparantly not due to performance or sonic issues. The cabinets are the problem.
By that, I mean I was told that the existing manufacturer insisted on ridiculous order quantities (my words) which made them no longer viable.
A search for a manufacturer who was both willing and able to produce them (I assume at a realistic price) was not to be found.
I would also guess that there's a limited market for a £7000+ speaker and that the quantities sold are not actually huge.
Maybe the "new" DBL will be a tad smaller and look less like the huge monsters that they currently do - maybe they'll in effect kind of replace the NBL and DBL.
I am sure the NBL will one day be considered a true "classic" such as the Brick etc.
I'm so pleased I own a pair

The difference between the NBL's and the Neats, the short version!
The NBL's are a superb speaker. They will go down as an all time classic. They represent the Naim sound perfectly, they have real insight to the music and allow you to see exactly what is going on. Not only can you hear a drummer strike a drum, you can hear the stick hit the skin and even the drummer sweating. They offer that much detail.
Where the Neats differ is that they just melt into the music in front of you. They are so beautifully balanced that they just paint a picture of music in front of you. From wall to wall from ceiling to the floor its just pure music.
I had the pleasure of having both speakers in my lounge before choosing and it was a real pleasure. Both speakers where an absolute delight.
At the end I just prefered the Neats, they just went that little bit deeper and that little bit higher and to me were better balanced overall.
To anyone buying a speaker in that price range then I would recommend that they listen to them both and I wouldn't fault anyone for choosing either speaker.
Regards

The end of the NBL
I was told that the cabinet maker upped his minimum order to about the 60 mark and this has tipped the balance agianst the NBLs life.
So when the current stock of cabinets are used up....thats it. ETD (Estimated Time of Death) later this year or possibly next year. I suppose it depends on whether there is a run on remaining stock...
Plans for the future.....too soon for Naim to tell.
Well....lets not forget that the CDS1 ran out of tray mechanics...and this led to the cds2 and the cds3. It just took time....
Also, if Seventh Veil are as good as Mike Lacey recons and if the reported dialogue between said company and PS and DG was more than comparing drinking notes.......who knows??
Cheers

I would prefer it if Naim would compare notes with Neat. Naim electronics and Neat speakers were made for each other. Now if Naim could combine the openness speed and transparancy of the SL2 and the size and scale of the Neat Ultimatums then they would have one hell of a speaker.
