NBL no longer listed on Naim price list
Posted by: John3 on 21 February 2004
Picked up the Feb 04 Naim price list at the Bristol show and noticed that the NBL is no longer listed. Printing error or has it been dicontinued/replaced?

I'd say they might already be quite close to that. There were two derivatives of an Ultimatum MF9 prototype shown (in different rooms) at Bristol 2000, and DBLs available upstairs; the comparison was illuminating. I don't know what the relative cabinet volumes are, but the DBLs looked considerably smaller while sounding bigger. Sure, you need wall space, but some people use more than that for the bloody telly!

Don't count on it Martin. Those of us who have them aren't going to let them go. Those that don't are going to be in a seller's market!

Well I'll sure be hanging on to mine. Just like my NAT01. (At Bristol on Friday Mark Raguet told me of someone who'd just sold a 12 year old NAT01 for £1100 if I recall correctly).
So with the demise of the NBL, the only current item in my system will be the Fraims. Bit sad really. Still sounds good though.

Hi Allen,
When I ordered my NBL's and then discovered that the finish I wanted was no longer an option, I discussed with my dealer (Derek at New Audio Frontiers, Loughborough) the possibility of refinishing - he told me he had seen some wonderful results, so I presume that he felt it was a worthwhile option. However, that may have been a case of getting the carcase refinished prior to original assembly.
Might still be worth making an enquiry or two....
Martin.
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

I wonder if Neat's can be re-finished. Their red velvet cloud is a wonderful finish and would go well against our pink walls.

"impossible to match this [beech] now with any other furniture"
Which makes it all the more odd that the Arrivas light wood finish will be beech not Maple (although there are many shades of maple - and cherry too, the last pair of cherry SL2s I saw looked like teak)

Allen,
I too have them in beech and find that I managed to cope with a centre Axess in cherry. Despite all the flow of opinion stating maple was the nearest match, I have to disagree and find that the cherry matches rather well. Personally, I like the beech finish as it helps to make them look a little smaller!

The canny buyer of loudspeakers tends to order them in black ash, as this is vastly less subject to the "whims and tangents of outrageous fashion". Also it will usually stay black, whereas the Naim beech (which personally I think is extremely tasteful and understated) will probably darken quite a lot over time.
Beech could easily be stained black, but a bit trickier to reverse the process...

Mmmmm, Black Ash is "soooooo" 1980's though... Also, "most" people nowadays if selling black ash kit apologise about the colour.....
In a few years time, I suspect "Beech" will be viewed the same; "it's just soooo 2000's"......

"Black Ash is "soooooo" 1980's though... " And now at the leading edge of fashion, the 80's are to the noughtys like the 70's were to the 90's.

I'm still not convinced

Yes, but it's black, and will still be black long after the association with that particular decade has faded from the popular consiousness. This was an era when silver plastic was not considered an acceptable case material for consumer electronics, so with that in mind I leave it to you to judge its aesthetic values in comparison with today's.
Black speakers will "work" acceptably in a visual sense with just about anything else -- far preferable to having to combine "beech" with "cherry" and "rosewood" in the same room. Plus it's usually cheaper, and elimenates the risk of ordering an exotic veneer only to find that you get the "freak sheet" with heavy figuring which looks like you've thrown up over it.

Rico -- stunning. [cough] SoundBases? Lingo on floor?
Nail on head, NB -- "a little dated" will always be no worse than that. If I remember correctly, the SBLs were accused of looking "a little dated" the day when they were released in 1986. They've always been unobtrusive, wall-hugging, functional sculpture, in a sense. Understatement creates designs which last.
In contrast, exposed yellow drive units and brushed alloy baffles will look tremendously "nouveau tacky" almost in months -- especially if the manufacturer "updates" the appearance every three weeks, General Motors-fashion.
All IMHO, of course!
