Apple TV v UPnP
Posted by: Tog on 30 September 2010
So how about a new Apple TV resplenent in glorious Naim black ..as the basis of a wifi stream to a Uniti or Qute or even nDAC.
It would have Apple remote 2 on Ipad (free)..would stream pretty much any audio codec even aiff through Itunes.
It costs £99 (or just over 4X the cost of the n-stream app)
Ideas, thoughts..brickbats..?

By the time you've finished setting up a Network/NAS drive and bought all the HDD's, routers and cables etc, a MacMini/iTouch will be about the same price. Personally I'd have the Mini with a 1TB HDD and play local. I've had all the NAS/Network etc and sold up.
Now its so simple:
Laptop with 1TB, which sync's with ATV and is the 'live copy'.
ATV stores the 'play' copy.
An external 1TB USB HDD is used to backup the laptops 'live' copy every few weeks, then this HDD is replaced every 6 months and 'archived'.

Seems bizarre if the case as UPnP was published as a 73-part International Standard, ISO/IEC 29341, in December 2008. It's certainly not a closed proprietary system.

Yeah well so is FLAC. I dont see iTunes supporting that anytime soon. Apple is as closed as it gets.... the door goes both ways.

Not sure if it's right ... but I read a report today that the new Apple TV (via optical output) resamples everything to 48kHz ... not good.

Hi Eloise,
Can you point me towards the report in question?
I have my new ATV plugged in to my Uniti right now and was just wondering if there was any way I could identify the sample rate, but it looks as though this is not available when using the Toslink inputs.

I can't post links to other forums, so you'll have to search google for "New Apple TV vs. Airport Express" as a quote (include the " marks) and it should be the first link Google finds. I'm not saying this is definitive but is the first mention I've seen of it.
