Underworld new al***

I think Underworld may have finally scored with their (5th) new album Oblivion With Bells. The track Beautiful Burnout is fab (after the crap of 100 Days Off, IMHO.

Interesting, I must admit that I find 'Oblivion With Bells' very disappointing.
'Crocodile', and especially 'Beautiful Burnout' are wonderful tracks, so are 'Glam Bucket' and 'Best Mamgu Ever', but there are also a lot of very weak tracks like 'Boy, Boy, Boy', 'Faxed Invitation'.
To me 'Ring Road' unlistenable, it sounds like 'The Streets'.
After the brilliant 'River Run Project' releases through their website in 2005-2006, 'Oblivion With Bells' was a huge let down, and for me probably their weakest album to date.
Underworldlive - River Run Releases
The tracks from it they have played live, again especially 'Beautiful Burnout' have been fantastic, and the performances this year have been up there with their peak in the late 90's. Some of these have been officially released through 'Live Here Now' on CDR, see:
Live Here Now /Underworld
I did not like '100 Days Off' at first, but it has steadily grown on me, and is now one of my favourite Underworld albums. It is worth trying again, 'Two Months Off' I find weak, but tracks like 'Sola Sistim', 'Dinosaur Adventure 3D' and 'Luetin' are brilliant.
They are still one of my favourite bands, especially live, and it is good that different albums appeal to different people.
Despite my disappointment with the album it does have 'Beautiful Burnout' which I, and many other on the Underworld forum, think is one of their best ever tracks.

Just been to www.underworldlive.com (their official website) and the upcoming Brixton shows are available as pre-order 2CD live sets, or digital download.
I will not be going to these gigs though, I really do not like Brixton Academy, awful acoustics, and a shoddy place, but I have also seen them four times in the last 18 months. Early next year, I will be ready again though.
I also ordered the Japanese import remix CD.
If anyone is interested in the recent live CDs, now also available through the above website, I would particularly recommend the Live in Brussels, 31/01/08 and Live in Koln, 28/01/08.
The two London Roundhouse shows from earlier this year are good too, but I am biased, as I was there for both of those.
If you like the studio version of 'Beautiful Burnout' or 'Glam Bucket', then the live versions on the live releases will blow you away.
Just also to mention that if you can find a copy the free bootleg 'Bootleg Babies' (1996-99) - compiled by RTSR, is also one of their very best selections of music and performance.

I purchased Oblivion with bells some time ago - I found it very disappointing.

I don't have much luck with live albums generally and am often disappointed. I was really disappointed with Everything Everything.
I might be tempted by what is recommended above.
JamieL - which live Underworld albums do you particularly like?

Hands down 'Bootleg Babies' put together by the RTSR group on Yahoo in 1999/2000. The double album 'Everything Everything' should have been, but a double live album would probably not have made commercial sense. It completely blows 'Everything Everything' away.

Here is a link to the artwork in case that helps:
Bootleg Babies cover art
and also some links to other RTSR cover artworks and listing I have:
Underowlrd artworks/listings
From the recent LiveHereNow/Underworldlive releases:
Live in Brussels, 31/01/08 and Live in Koln, 28/01/08 are my favourites. I can't find the full track listings, otherwise I would post them, but these two shows flow very well, and have a few unusual tracks from things live the River Run Projects'.
It is also worth registering on their website, as you can download or stream their studio sessions from the last couple of years.
underworldlive.com - official website.
Hope that helps.

JamieL,
Thanks for your help. I have registered with Underworldlive.
The RTSR download links for the Bootleg Babies don't not work anymore which is not surprising being 7-8 yrs old. But I found it here:
http://lavamus.com/Album/2377814/Underworld/Beautiful_Burnout/download-mp3/
at a small price
Thanks

Hi Bruce
The link looks like it is for 'Beautiful Burnout' (single and mixes from 'Oblivion with Bells', 2007).
'Bootleg Babies' (2000) should be available for free snf lossless (CDR or Flac files), or trade through the Yahoo RTSR group (you need to register) or possibly on the 'Darktrain Forum' linked off underworldlive.com (probably needs registeration to post there).
The link to http://rtsr.rowla.com/ is quite out of date, but the Yahoo group is still very active, as is darktrain.
The 2008 live albums for sale through underworldlive.com are worth getting one of, especially one of the two I mentioned above.
There is still quite a lot of material Underworld perform live that has not had any sort of studio recorded release, so the live albums have some real surprises, like 'You Do Scribble'.

Hi Ryan
Have alook at:
BT on Wikipedia
BT (Brian Transeau) US techno artist. Melodic dance music in the same area as Underworld. Not sure which album I would recommend, 'Movement in Still Life' is the only one I have. Others can offer more info. I am sure.

Hope that helps.

For me BT's music is more accessible than underworlds stuff - its more melodic and yet retains its cutting edge.
Hence I have several Underworld CD's, but all BT's stuff.

JamieL,
I have had a listen to a few tracks from the Bootleg babies. Its great in places but some of the tracks go on for too long and its just something about live albums that don't do it for me. I'm sure being there is/was fab but it does not come across I feel. I know I'm likely in a minority here. I think generally live recordings lack presence.
It is much better than Everything Everything though.
BT people - I have Ima which I thought was very crap in places but showed signs of promise in earlier parts. I may give Movement in Still Life a whirl.
Ryan D - three essential Underworld albums IMHO are Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1993), Second Thoughest in the Infants (1996) and Beaucoup Fish (1998).

I particularly like the energy of the live versions, but in general I prefer live recordings so that isn't a surprise.
I also particularly like the way that live, Underworld (and some similar bands, like Orbital) make one track evolve into the next one without a break, so you end up with a hybrid section, where one track breaks down, and the next builds.
For me 'Bootleg Babies' is their best album, 'Dark Train' which runs into the original instrumental version of 'Born Slippy' being the highlights. I like all the first four studio albums (not counting the original line-up's two albums 'Under the Radar' and the other one).
The download releases from 2005-6 I mentioned above are also favourites, 'The River Run Project'.
There are also a lot of tracks by Underworld that did not get album releases, and can only be found on singles or live albums, some of which are even better than tracks that made the studio albums, like 'Born Slippy (original instrumental)', Dark Train','You Do Scribble', 'Darc', 'Bamboo'.
I must give some more BT a try, I do like 'Movement in Still Life' but for me it doesn't have the edge of Underworld, or Orbtial.
