First of all a BIG hello to all here, i'm looking to buy a DVD5 is there anything i need to know or look out for with regards to S/W versions/updates prices etc and how to tell if the unit has had the "Multichannel" upgrade board fitted many thanks for any help.

And hello to you too Smile

This is not a trade forum, so no real tips on where to buy Winker

But the obvious one would be to ask your dealer. There are some dealers with s/h, ex-demo and trade-in DVD5s.

The software updates are usually free and are disc-based. Your dealer can most likely provide a disc, if not contact Naim directly.
More info on how to find the firmware versions and which one is current can be found in the FAQ section of this forum.

If possible have the seller check the version and have him do the update. It is rare but they can fail and then you would have to get it fixed. If bought from a Naim dealer he will surely do this for you.

The owner should know if a multichannel board was fitted. This is not something that many DVD5s have.

Why a DVD5? Why now? I would wonder if it's the most sensible purchase now unless you can get it at a real bargain price.
I happily admit I've never used one but I suspect there are cheaper options with better picture quality and decent sound.

Don't know any that are that a good a CDlayer.
But I agree, if it's for movies only, a BluRayPlayer might be more sensible.
That said, I wouldn't want to part with mine because it's my CDP and great at that.

That's all I use my DVD5 for these days - as a transport for my nDAC. Our mate Richard Dane seems to think that it's one of the better options for that purpose! Winker

On the basis that the nDac is apparantly able to 'normalise' any incoming streams, I would suggest any transport would suffice if thats the primary aim. Heck you could purchase a brand new mac mini for probably the same money.

Careful, or you'll start yet another thread about transports with the nDAC. I personally have found that transports and digital cables do sound different, but am at odds with many in that I do not believe USB sticks are better than my DVD5 as source.

Not sure - but they do seem to going quite cheap ATM. At some stage I intend to see if it can be bettered by HDX or Unitiserve.

I was talking as a CDP, not as a transport.
Although different, the DVD5 is imho on par with the CD5x, which is pretty good for a CDP. Less treble detail, more bass and oomph.

I wouldn't buy one new anymore, simply because it is not a BluRay player, but I would buy one s/h anytime if I also wanted a CDP.

The one thin I miss though is the lack of a shuffle mode. That's really annoying. Both on DVD5 and n-Vi.

Sounds about right. Certainly better as a CDP than the CD3 I used to use in my study. Smile

I have had an intense and controversial relationship with the DVD5, which I meant, then, to use as only source.

Just two points:
- Its picture quality is the best I have seen, having owned, in this order, Denon DVD5000, Toshiba SD900e, Lexicon RT10 before the Naim.
- Its CD replay skills don't come near the CD5x's, in my opinion, and not those of a CD5, for that. Used as drive into an AV2 gave better results, though.

Cheers,
Massimo

Ah, as always, detail is key Winker

I didn't as such call it better than the CD5x in general. The CD5x has more treble detail. It is cleaner and clearer.
But, the DVD5 does a nicer, rounder, warmer bass.
In my case, in my room that's the more important feature.
As clarity to many is the key feature, you could argue the CD5x is the "better" CDP, but to me the DVD5 sounded more like what I want from a CDP (with my room and my taste in music).

As a drive for the AV2? I couldn't disagree more. As a drive for the AV2 menas the AV2 is running in "stereo" as opposed to "direct" mode and imho the "stereo" mode is nowhere close to the direct mode.
"stereo" sounds artificial, much less detail and clarity, much less PRaT.
I never use mine in "stereo" for music.
