Uniti Iphone/Itouch app

Any news on when this app will be released?? Last time I asked it was beginning of August
Posted on: 11 August 2010 by Develyn
May I add: Will there need to be an update to the Uniti before this application will work? If yes, how will the update be applied, by end user or send to dealer?
Posted on: 12 August 2010 by drfthomas
Of course you need an update. This will presumably be released september, next year.

@Develyn : More on this to follow in the coming weeks. Please be patient.

@drfthomas, why would we need an definately need an upgrade? Uniti is already a upnp renderer and I would have assumed the app would use that interface.
Posted on: 20 August 2010 by drfthomas
Actually I don't know for sure, wether you need an update or not. But my experience with Naim so far is that simple things are made as complicated as possible. If you look at Logitech (Squeezebox/Ipeng) or Qnap/Qmobile you see how simple such things can be done. By the way neither Qnap nor Logitech would force their customers to send their products in for a simple update...

n-Stream app for Uniti is not just a UPnP control point (for which no software update would be required)–it actually functions as a full-on IP-based controller for all functions–not just streaming, but FM presets, CD player control, internet radio, etc.–without using a PC for control.
Software on the digital media player board has been re-written to accommodate these additional functions (transmitted via Ethernet) and therefore requires a re-flash of both its core and that of the rest of the Uniti hardware itself.
Trust me, it'll be worth it–Naim's put a lot of effort into getting this right.

If you really need an update that's bad news for me. After the 24bit update was announced here I waited 3 month until my german dealer even knew about it. I assume one can not do the update process by one's own, so it will be month until I can use the app...

David, drfthomas, thanks for your replies. I actually traded in my iPod classic (as it sounds rubbish anyway even with lossless) for an iPod touch in anticipation of this app. PlugPlayer goes some way to helping but I cant wait for the official app. I dont suppose anyone has any idea how close we are to it. I'm lucky that I have the most amazing Naim dealer and they are only 10 minutes away so the firmware upgrades are pretty easy for me.

Andy, David,
I've read your words as if the Uniti works perfectly as UPnP renderer and as if any UPnP control point was able to control it.
Have you tried this and with which software?
As I've reported this here https://forums.naimaudio.com/ev...2903417/m/9842922437 I've tried several software without any correct results...
Please give me some details.

I've read on this discussion https://forums.naimaudio.com/ev...2903417/m/9592992337 that the n-serve app (ex HDX app) for apple I-phone\I-pad touch is mainly a simplified application to transform these device in a remote control for the HDX. (Please let me know if I'm wrong)
In the other hand, I've seen the HDX desktop client on the product page (http://www.naimaudio.com/hifi-product-range/568)
Is there any plan to make an equivalent to this last software for the uniti and/or the uniti serve?
Thanks in advance.
Jean-Luc

Jean Luc,
The app they are talking about here is the nStream app. Controls all functions of the Uniti and Uniti Qute. It is coming, though seemingly on top of a glacier. It will be here very soon and will be just what you want.

€ 29,99
uniti from firmware 3.00.00 or above.
And how do i read file's out of mine HDD. Do i need something like a server on my computer/NAS??
And why not selection for CD at the uniti inputs? Only the software controlled parts?

Naim's decision to charge what they want to - but it seams a little mean to expect users to pay for an App which is only usable with your own devices. Sonos don't charge for their app and their devices are much less. neither do Sooloos charge for the app to control their media players. If you're interested in the Uniti app (or n-Stream app for that matter) it's because you have a Naim device!

n-Stream app for Uniti is available now from the Apple App Store at £22.99.
However, an update to firmware 3.00.00 is necessary and "existing NaimUniti customers should contact their dealer for further information regarding firmware upgrade".
I find this disappointing in the extreme - to have to dismantle the Uniti from its' home location and then lug it all the way to my nearest dealer (where there is no nearby car park !)just for a firmware upgrade is pretty pathetic. Why not a simple upgrade at home via download and usb - like a firmware upgrade on a camera ?
Additionally, I can find no mention of the application launch nor the firmware upgrade on the Naim website. Maybe it's embedded somewhere and I missed it !!
Overall, I expect more from Naim.

I think it's more of a hardware and firmware update to bring it into line with the UnitiQute.
P.S it will cost around £340.00 ish.

The UnitiQute bypass the DAC in a Ipod/Itouch
and plays from the on board DAC I think.
I may be wrong but i think this is the case.
So i think this is bringing the whole range In line with each other.

Kane - where have you heard this?
I contacted Naim today and they mention only a firmware update, due in October.

I did the same as yourself and phone them and asked what it does and how much.
As i got my Uniti last year and i've already had one update.

This is the case but as I never intend to use my ipod touch as a music source for my UNITI, can I get the firmware update without paying for the hardware update if that is all it does?

Can anyone from Naim or a Naim dealer explain the update process and it's cost?
Posted on: 26 August 2010 by Andy McGhee
I have been told the same by my dealer. This is what they say.
The currently available n-stream app will work with the qute but not the uniti unless the hardware/firmware is updated. On older models this will cost £340 and on newer models £100. The hardware upgrade is indeed to allow the uniti to use a digital stream from an ipod and use the uniti DAC.
However, apparently another version of the app/uniti firmware will be released maybe October which will allow n-stream to work with uniti's and does not require the hardware upgrade. Confusing situation indeed and not well communicated and should have been made clear in the app description in iTunes before the over-keen (me) already forked out for it and have no prospect of using it for ages.

Sorry to hear that you downloaded the app Andy. An announcement from Naim on their website would have been nice. Oh well back to waiting. I got my Uniti last July and no doubt will require the £340 upgrade. Argghhh!!!!

Doh, $530 to be able to use the iPhone app? Ouch.
Posted on: 26 August 2010 by drfthomas
It really is ridiculous. I am one of the first uniti customers in germany ever. For the last update (2.0...) I waited 3 month since it was announced here. Now there's the app I waited for so long but I can't use it. Communication is really disastrous. Seems new customers are more important than regular customers. Thinking about a change... Anybody interested in an uniti, or perhaps 202/200 or nait 5i/CD 5i)? At least I keep my 72/140/Hicap which fanstatically work with my Squeezebox with ipeng app (costs for both less than 300€)
