@ROTF...

Don't forget the lasting legacy of Acorn... The Acorn Risc Machine processor - coloqually known as the ARM processor. The Archimedies (and it's successors), along with the Amiga for that matter, were basically killed off by the cheep Windows machines.

If you want to see something strangely familiar - Google for the Acorn Newspad.

Hello Roft,

Goodness, I came to the forum hoping to pick up info and a few tips on the current state of things, mainly the new(ish) streaming methods. It was soon obvious that the knowledge of some of the folks here well and truly swamps mine.

I will be printing off your post as I will need some time to digest and understand/remember it all properly.

You certainly provoke good memories of those early days - Ian McNaught-Davis, I can see him now though I am not sure I could have pulled his name out of memory; unmissable Sunday morning viewing. Where did you find that logo? I have a feeling you may have already of had it!

I will look out with interest for the new Amiga you speak of. Thanks very much for taking the time to post the information, it will surely be of interest to more than just me.

Regards
Peter

About the iPod hardware upgrade, I understand this will let the Uniti bypass the iPod internal DAC, right?
But, what´s the point of it since iTunes does not allow the upload of higher quality lossless music files to an iPod anyway???
Using the F/W 2.0.0 we can now enjoy 24/96 files by USB or UPnP but it´s impossible to upload a converted 24/96 FLAC to an iPod unless you downgrade the bit rate...
I didn´t tested the exact limit imposed by iTunes, but it´s close to the standard 44.1/16.

Are you sure about that???

Dear All,

I spotted a new App from iTunes called TagNPlay that apparently works with Linn, Naim and Boulder DACs and servers.

It costs $9.95 from the iTunes store.

The iPod will support upto 16/48 ... so whats the point? Well most people's collection is based on CD anyway and I suspect the facility is more designed to be in addition to UPnP playback and for convenience when other people bring their iPod round than designed for everyday use.

It's the same as the iPod connection on a DAC (though control is more on the NaimUniti / UnitiQute). Its the same point as why people go out and buy Wadia and Onkyo docks with digital output. It may not be something that you see yourself doing, but many people obviously do.

Aha, another manufacturer that charges for an iPod touch / iPhone control app.... Winker

IMHO a much easier-to-use app than PlugPlayer, though there are some Internet Radio stations that are unplayable on the Uniti family due to format/bitstream limitations.

The app uses Last.fm for expanded artist information, but does NOT re-tag the original files themselves. App does lookup cover art when not supplied by the UPnP server–where this is unavailable (or, in the case of hi-res files), it supplies a photo of the artists from Last.fm's entries. (It caches artwork locally, so you must re-start the app if you've updated or re-added artwork to an already-browsed tree listing.)

Unlike the native n-Stream app, you cannot browse by cover art when viewing Albums.

(Of course, as I typed this, the app crashed on my iPhone, as it expects an uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection. Oh well–at least the n-Stream app will re-connect automatically.)

Well I admit - it's another manufacturer charging for an app which they designed to control their own hardware (PS Audio Bridge module) though it also controls Naim and others...

If the information I recall is correct it's based on PlugPlayer's code.

Well, if I could use the nStream app to control my non-Naim system, then maybe it would justify its price tag. At least some of the others have support for other UPnp servers....

David/others, can someone post some photos of the app in action?

Strange..I have not had that happen on my i-pod touch which is set to go to sleep after 2 minutes. Actaully so far TagNPlay seems to be really stable ( for me ).

Unfortunately, (for me) they have built in ipod connectivity, but even I reluctantly have to admit there are a lot of ipods out there. I have decided that I can live with that, but I will not pay a penny more for anything Apple.

Unless....now I rather fancy a nice little laptop, 13" screen would do. Oh, and with one of those nice touchscreens.......Is anyone listening?

That's also why we need the Uniti works correctly with UPnP control point!
With a laptop we can control a large music library with a lot of options depending of the media player used.
Actually there is a bug in the uniti.
I don't know any UPnP software that can work around this bug.
There isn't any UPnp server from which we can have all control options to an uniti.
I don't think this is intentional but of course this give to the hardware servers from naim the pole position...
I hope Bubleguuum (the developer of the free UPnP software for foobar) will be helped by Naim people to find a solution and this could be done in the next firmware.
(This should prove that Naim is not only interested in (love $!!!) Apple products.)
But I'm not sure this is possible as the future firmware is already embedded in the uniti(s) actually shipped...

Hi all,

I have no digital sources but I do have a PS Audio Power Plant Premier and I get their monthly newsletter. Interested parties may want to go to psaudio.com and read the August 2010 newsletter as it has information on a UPnP server app' to be released by year's end.

Best Regards,
Mark Dunn

Hi Mark

That's the app I was referring to here:

Hi Geoff,

Actually their server app' will, I think, be an n-serve app' on steroids. Not released until years end, apparently.

Mark,

Are you referring to the iPad version of tagnplay?
Posted on: 02 September 2010 by JLD
Mark,
Thanks for this information.
As the actual tagNPlay is an UPnP application, I'm curious to know if it works correctly with the Naim Uniti (as control point).
If someone can test this for us, thank you very much in advance!
With a correct behavior of the Naim Uniti and with what I've read on this newsletter:
quote:
The point is you cannot control how this is presented on the controller with any server software I am familiar with. Couple that with the poor interfaces found on most UPnP server software packages like Twonky, Asset, or Foobar200 and you find yourself wishing it could be a bit better.

this "tagNPlay Server" application could be a good option...
a suivre...

Hi PC. No, not the iPad version. Go to PSAudio.com and look for their August newsletter, - it explains things better than I ever could. Also, the people at PS Audio are usually very helpful if you e-mail them or ask a question on their forums.

Nothing exciting about TagnPlay Server - UnitiServe already provides similar UPnP organization (e.g., turn off Composers or Conductors within the Views listing)....
