What is the HDX like playing back 24bit 96kHz FLAC?
Posted by: Consciousmess on 10 March 2009
Hi,
I thought I'd ask this question as I've just been searching for hi res music and am aware FLAC is the way. I also see the HDX plays them, so what is the sound like?
Is this better than the 555 with 16bit 44.1kHz?
Is it better than the 555 with HDCD?
I look forward to your replies!

in my opinion the high res playback was better than the 555.
We did not try flac versions. 24 96 wav. vs
red book. HDX
red book vs red book. 555
no hdcd.
High res files sound clear as day if engineered correctly, which can be good alot of detail or bad depending on the musicianship.

And make sure that, for best results, the FLAC files use practically NO storage compression - these take fewer processor cycles to decode and sound significantly better.
On second thought-why believe me, you do the comparison yourself....

I have not heard 24/96 through an HDX, but I can say the difference between 16/44 and 24/96 is HUGE.
MUCH bigger difference than any other comparison I have ever heard. CDP vs CDP, cables vs cables, vinyl vs CDP.... none can hold a candle to the differences obtained by hi-res.
The only analogy that might make sense to those who have never listened to 24/96 music, is the jump from standard to hi-def TV. 24/96 is as equally mind (ear) blowing.
Once experienced, you will never want to go back.

Thanks for that - really.
Maybe when the format takes off properly, the HDX will be the way.
Do you envisage an HDX2 In say the next 5 years?

I bought a 24/96 FLAC download from Linn music. I don't own the same music on CD to do a direct A:B comparison but I can say it sounds exceptional. Sweet, crisp, natural and full of life.
